Mauser 98 safety problems

I just completely disassembled a mauser 98 bolt. Cleaned and lubed and reassembled. Now I can't get the three position safety to safe once I put it in the "fire" position. The cocking piece moves forward when I place the safety in the "fire" position. I can fire the action, recock, but the cocking piece does not come back far enough to move the safety back to safe.
What did I do wrong?

    You know, this is one of those things that just has to work when the bolt is assembled properly. It's almost impossible to reassemble improperly. So, take it apart again and look for a burr on the part of the safety lever that rotates into the front of the cocking piece, or on the cocking piece itself, or for a tiny bit of foreign matter in that general area. I would scrub all the parts off with a toothbrush in a coffee can containing kerosene, dry, reassemble, use a spray lube, let drip dry, and then try it out. Bet it works.[;)]

    I believe you need to pull back on the little spring loaded catch and give the gas shield another rotation.

    Thanks for those who tried to help, the problem was not in the bolt at all but in the trigger. The spring was not pushing the sear completely up, allowing the cocking piece to move too far.
    It looks like someone replaced the spring with a very weak one. I put a proper spring in and all is fine now.
