RE: Sights for Old Remington .22 #4 Take Down
I have inherited a very nice old Remington single shot, rolling block,lever-release take down .22RF, full octagon barrel, Ser # "J233375 22" followed by a sideways "p". The top "flat" of the oct barrel has 2 V-shaped notches for the bases of the F & R sights. I have a front sight mounted and the top piece of what appears to be a 3 pc rear step-sight. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT WHICH SIGHTS WERE ORIGINAL FOR THIS RIFLE AND/OR WHERE I CAN GET THEM IF NEED BE. In searching via Gunbroker I have either been unable to view clearly the sights or gotten conflicting types. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't know if this will help much, but GunPartsCorp lists a complete rear sight for the #4 Rolling Block Remington for $21.40.....but they're listed as "Sold Out".

I'm looking at my own rem. model #4 , not the rear "v" site as you described ??? I do beleive mine is an org. factory adj. rear site , via a small screw . Dont know how many variations of these that Rem. made ??? would be interested in a possible purchase if you decide not to keep yours ... My sn#J2810xx , a very nice solid gun but the bore is 'terrible' ??? I rarely shoot mine , with shorts only ...

The V notches are called "dove tails". Can you post a pic of the gun and sights that you have? Are there any open threaded holes on the tang behind the hammer?

As for "threaded holes on tang behind hammer": I can't really tell if they are threaded or not but I can tell you that there are three holes in tang--none are open: the first one (behind the hammer) is filled by a small screw head (probably goes into hammer/trigger mechanism inside??); the third hole is filled by a larger screw head that apparently extends thru stock to threaded metal insert washer on bottom of stock; the second one is small in size (similar to first hole) and is just before third hole--it too is filled but not by a screw head--rather either the end of a screw from inside or a metal tit/guide from internal mechanism.0 -
I have a couple of #4 Remingtons with the same sights. The rear sight
comprises a dovetail block with a rear sight screwed on to it and an elevating screw at the rear if the sight- 3pcs.
The tang has only a large screw head at the rear holding the receiver to the stock and slightly forward of that is the threaded end of the mainspring retaining screw. If you have additional holes there was a tang peep sight mounted at one time.0 -

Orig box and all--$4250!! Very similar to mine except mine doesn't have the script "Remington" and the stamp only reads "Remington Arms Co. Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A.". Also, elsewhere I've read that the lever take down it shows wasn't introduced until 1901????. v35: Thanks--see pics for item #36138008 sold 8/25; that looks like my rifle except that item is a 25-10. Rear sight looks like piece I have--mine would have a screw fastener into dovetailed base at front and a "step" (not a screw) at rear for adjustment???? (I'm missing rear dovetail base and "step") Also that item doesn't appear to have first tang hole like mine--3/4" behind hammer "slot"--peep sight huh?
2 more questions: are these ser #s chronological? And can someone give me a brief definition of "case color"/"color case" (I've seen it both ways.)

This is color case hardening on the frame, The real case hardening like this, is done with charcoal and a leather wrap and heated. Savage and some others used an acid wash on shotguns recievers to get the same effect.

Here is a picture of my #4 and my #6 remingtons. Other than wiping them off, they're just like I got them. I gave $200.00 for the #4 and $130.00 for the #6. The rear sight is about the worst looking piece on the 4, but I believe it is original and it's got a pretty good bore. I also included a picture of the tang screws and my barrel is marked with the script Remington and is chambered
.22 Short or Long. The front sight is just a small bead sight.
What appears to be a crack behind the hammer is just a dirty spot.
The #6 has a little sheet metal flip up peep sight on it. Here it is with a Hamilton sheet metal #027. You can see the case colors well on the Remington.
