Savage 10ML II question
I just indulged in a Savage 10ML II. Well, I traded a pretty fine Remington 700ML for it. Anyway, before I bought it, I printed off a copy of the owners manual from Savage. In it, it lists 3 smokeless powders they recommend. One was Vhitavouri 110, one was IMR SR4759, and the other one I can't remember. Anyway, in the manual I got with the gun, it lists IMR 4227 instead of the third one in the current manual. Did they discover that IMR 4227 didn't work very well, or was it just not listed? My second question is didn't all 10ML II's come with the accu-trigger or was that an option or was it only on later models. Mine doesn't have one, but I don't think it's a big deal, but could I buy an aftermarket trigger for the 10ML II? Thanks in advance.

The IMR4227 with the non-suggested 240gr XTP (since it is .451" dia instead of the .452" dia they recommend) at 47.0gr went .961" for 3 shots at 100yds in mine. I have a pound of the N110 but have not tested it yet,..neither have I tested the 250gr XTP and SST as recommended by the factory. They told me on the phone when I called tech support to talk to an experienced loader, that the .452" dia is one very important key to a complete gas seal which is the basis for the whole system. Also,..the black sabot designed for high pressure MUST be used. These are superb muzzleloaders, but at the operating pressure they acheive in the comparably short time, they need a strong seal which is acheived quickly. Also,..they recommend the win209 primer ONLY. I thought,.."yeah right I have reloaded 10's of thousands of rounds" and I experimented with other primers as well,....WRONG!!!!!! the groups blew up big time. They did the research,..so follow the powders and bullet suggestions and it is a VERY ACCURATE rig capable of 300yd kills in the right situation.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Thanks JustC for the info. I went to the Barnes Bullets website and got some interesting info from them folks. They said they have been doing some testing on their own with the Savage 10ML II. They said while the Savage can handle the high pressures of smokeless powder, most of the sabots they tested could not, which you already knew. They have switched to a thinner, lighter sabot which they say will handle the highest pressures derived with smokeless powder, and that you can tell the difference between the new and old sabots by looking at the base. The new ones have ridges inside the base cone, and the old ones are smooth. They said they have also been doing some powder testing on their own with the Savage. They said that H4198 and RL-7 develop lower pressures, about the same as Pyrodex and Triple 7, and they achieved sub-moa accuracy and excellent velocity, although they didn't say what it was. In their tests, they found that about 65 grains of either powder mentioned above yielded about the same results as achieved using 150 grains of Pyrodex or Triple 7, so I thought that was worth mentioning and passing along. 0 -
You will find that N110 will run some fast numbers,..but increases recoil. The 4227 is mild in recoil and since I have not run it over the chrono yet,..I would bet 2100fps. Do yourself a favor and don't go down to the little powders they are talking about,..go with the N110, IMR4227, etc and run her hot. I fired mine doing load work-up the first day out, 18 times and NEVER patched the barrel. The 19th round slid down the tube just like the 2nd or 3rd round. This rig is made to run,..so give it room and feed it enough powder to get it up to max speed.[;)] I can say that I have shot quite a few centerfire rifles that would not shoot as tight as this ML.
