Double stamped serial number

I am offering a handgun for auction which contains a double stamped serial number. After a couple of inquiries about this, I was wondering how this practice would come into existance, (mistake, restocking, etc.), and what effect this marking has on the value of the handgun?

    Fishy serial no! It looks to me like a couple of the numbers were deliberitly sanded out...is that right? If so It will do something to its value and will limit your market. This topped with your rating may devalue your gun to 0. In fact, if you get caught with it,it may end up costing you. My advice, for what its worth, would be to unlist it. Then improve your seller rating with another gun. If however you have smudged the serial so not to be viewed, I question why the serial no.s that are double stamped are not the same. If they are the same and is verifiable, let someone list it on GB that is a established seller and hold on, it could be valuable.

    You're fine. I've seen other Ruger's that had that FACTORY defect. It might bring a little preminum. The Ruger guys love that kinda stuff.

    looks like the last digits are a 6 over a 2. hmmm....best call ruger. this can cause problems on ffl transfers.

    To follow up the inquiries about the quality of the serial numbers, it is the online picture that was intentionally smudged not the actual gun.

    On the handgun there are two very clear, 6-digit, unique serial numbers, 702 serial numbers apart. The second stamping is slightly offset from the first stamping, allowing both sets of serial numbers to be clearly read with the naked eye.

    As was mentioned to me in both email and this forum, I will be contacting Ruger ASAP.

    On their web site is the following statement, which should afford me and others that my be interested in owning this handgun, a statement about the two unique serial numbers and any issues with an ffl transfer.
