nef handi rifle ? for gunsmiths

i have handi in 204 and i was looking at the hammer. i would liek to lower the scope and use medium rings instead of the high rings i have on it now. can i cut off the extreme tip, and drill and tap a hole in the side of the hammer and put a hammer extension like the winchester 94s?

does this gun need all that mass to strike the firing pin or will a lightened hammer do the trick?

i love the gun, just wish to lower the height of the scope.

  You should be able to cut off the entire spur and it would still fire fine; these critters have a very stout hammer spring.
  
  Save the seals-club a liberal instead.

  hiph. asked about cutting the hammer to lower the scope, this is not a good idea. these are investment castings and are very hard/brittle, any cutting and drilling would be difficult and you run the risk of breaking the hammer.

  I tried cuttting the hammer on mine, it was a 30-06 and just like MIKE WISKEY said it ended up breaking off, before i finished the cut , ended up replacing the hammer because it started having misfires with the broken hammer

  Uncle Mikes used to make extension thumb pieces to go off to the side of the hammer. They are not in the catalog anymore. I heard they got sued over some one having an accidental discharge when they let one slip. If you are lucky you may find a leftover around a gunshow or shop. you could take a piece of round steel rod and make one ,they are very simple in how they clamp onto the hammer. They do add an extra safety risk as the stud sticking out can catch on something and cock the gun without you knowing .
  If you can find one ofthe scopes that have an oval or flatside top and bottom to the eye end ,that may work.
