hi power or cz

Me again :)Iam kinda at a delima on wich to purchase, Browning HP or a CZ75. I used to own a high power and really regret getting rid of it but have heard some good about the CZ's. Ive never had the opportunity to play with a CZ so I have no clue as to how well they handle although they look like a hi power I dont know if they are the same quality. I know the CZ's are a bit cheaper but Iam willing to spring the extra for the HP if its that big of a difference between the two. What Iam looking for is a good home defense pistol in either 9mm or .40. Any opinion on the two would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, SG

    You will find some die hard Hi Power fans and CZ fans out there. I believe you would be served well by ither hand gun. I have owned both and would trust both with my life. My 2 cents. [8D]

    Both guns are great, and both are popular for good reason. Either one will serve you well, and I'd suggest you simply try out a CZ for a little while and see if you like it better. There are plenty of them floating around. The differences between the two are relatively minor, and largely a matter of personal preference.

    The main practical difference is that the CZ gives you the option of carrying double-action with the hammer down if you want it, which could be useful if you didn't want to carry cocked-and-locked. Personally, I do like that ability.

    In terms of safety, the Browning has a mag safety so it can't be fired without the mag in place. Some people consider this a plus. . .some consider it a minus. It can be de-activated if you don't like it. One nice thing about it that if necessary, you can instantly "inactivate" the gun by hitting the mag release.

    The CZs don't have this feature, but the newer ones do have a firing pin safety, so the gun cannot go off if dropped, etc. CZs are probably a bit tougher in terms of using +P ammo, for what that's worth, though this is probably irrelevant if you are going for .40 ammo. CZs hold a little more ammo, but in reality 15 (or 16) 9mms vs. 13 for the Hi-Power really isn't a significant difference.

    Grip styles are also different, though both guns have reputations of being comfortable. That's something you have to try and see if you like it.

    In terms of home defense .40 is a bit more powerful than 9mm, and has more stopping power, but the ammo is also more expensive, and the gun is a little harder to control. Obviously you lose capacity with .40, but with 10 or more that's still plenty. You can do what I do, and fire the cheapo 9mms at the range, but keep a mag or the hotter 9mm+Ps handy for emergencies.

    I was going to scratch my 'hi-cap itch', and shot the CZ on several occasions. Shot just fine, no problems with 3 types of HP ammo, and of course hardball. Having the option as to how to fire the first shot is a plus for me.

    I have an HP in 9mm. I like it a lot. It has served me well for 15 years and it has seen a lot of ammo. When I first bought it, I had the mag safety deactivated and the trigger worked on. It is always reliable and a pleasure to shoot. I have no experience with a CZ but I would recommend finding an indoor range that rents CZs. Shooting before you buy is the only way to go if you can find the time/place. Another plus about a HP is that many, many foreign military services use the HP as their standard sidearm so parts will be around forever and are cheap. I don't know how compatible the CZ with any other handguns. Enjoy...

    With all the pondering on wich one to get, yall have made it a bit easier. I was a little unsure of the quality put into the newer HP's, although FN is topnotch,they've just been bounced around alot the last few years with different manufacturers it makes you a little leary especially for a $600.00+ pricetag. With all that said I think Iam gonna go for the CZ. I really like the sa/da option and not really concerned with the whole droppin the gun and it going off safety feature, I think that feature was incorporated primarily for the French. j/k , thanks for the helpful advice.     You really do need to try both a newer HiPower and a Cz. Remember that the DA trigger will be an entirely different feel with takeup than the SA HiPower. The Cz has one of the best DA triggers for out of box. I feel the Cz may be a bit bulkier than the HiPower but that is as much opinion as anything. Never tried the DA HiPower, but seems to me the reviews were that the trigger was a little hinky and may or may not use common HiPower Mags. Check that before you invest.
    Both are quality pistols.

    One other option that hasnt been mentioned on the HP, The SAS system, you can cock it then bring the hammer forward and set the safety, when ncalled to service just drop the safety and it is ready to go. Seems to me its the best of both worlds, SA trigger with the same basic speed as a DA.
