40 vs 10mm I need a question answered.

I hate to ask this dumb question but, I have a Parker 40 cal gun.

I purchased some 10mm ammo for it today. It will not let the slide go all the way down after loading a bullet in the chamber.

Here goes.. Is there a difference between the 40 cal and the 10mm bullet?

The mag says 10mm the gun says 40 cal??????

    Yes, there is a difference. The diameter of the bullet is the same, but the 10mm case is longer. If the gun, especially the barrel, says .40 S&W, then that is the only ammunition you can use. Best of luck and please be careful!

    to add to the first answer... ALWAYS use the ammo that the gun is stamped as being.... just because the mag loads into the well of the gun doesnt mean that you are using the right ammo, and if the slide does close using the wrong ammo in the wrong gun can cause big problems... a little attention to detail will go a long way for your own safety and others who may be shooting with you

    Never! I repeat never fire a 10mm cartridge from a .40s&w barrel, even if somehow it happens to fit into the chamber. Unless, of course, you want to change your board handle from tgf600 to tgf3fingers.

    iF YOURS WAS LIKE MY THREE, you have a 50/50 chance ot it firing anyway. I wondered why the gun shop kept selling them to me cheap. Its because they don't function! nambu

    I was alway told that the reason that 10mm failed was that it usually broke the frames of the pistols that it was chambered in. The 40SW was backed off enough so that the mid size frame autos didn't fail. Think of 10mm ammo as being 40SWmag.

    The chamber pressure of a .40 cal is 22,000 compared to 29,000 for the 10mm, it is a good thing that it did not go all the way in you could have been seriously injured

    The reason for the .40 is the 10mm recoil was just to much for small government agents it very well may have cracked a few frames I remember when the rumor started in the gun rags but I cannot imagine with all the much more powerful guns out on the market, the gun manufactures dropping the ball like that

    Good Luck , we sold some of these (years ago) and soon found out what wonderfull P.O.S.'s they really are ...Dump it and run !!! Always load Only the Proper ammo into a firearm (what the cal. is stated on the GUN),not what will fit into the mag.!!! Its a good thing some 458 Win. Mag rounds would not fit !!!

    The biggest reason that the 10mm fell out of favor was the fact that a lot of officers couldn't flat out handle the recoil/muzzle blast.
    Sort of like the .357/.38 special situation years ago. By NO MEANS should you try to chamber/fire a 10mm in a .40 frame. Many of the .40's were built on 9mm frames that just plain were not made for that much recoil/pressure.

    The 10mm is one of the better hand gun rounds hands down. Some of the old 1911A1 guns converted to use the 10mm did have frames cracked. No gun developed to use the 10mm has ever had this issue that I know of. There are only a few gun being activly produced today that are chambered for the 10mm. Glock, EAA/Tanfoglio. Kimber has produced a few in recent times under limited priduction. Ruger produced a 38/40 10mm combination revolver. S&W also made a few relovers in recent time. The FBI used the S&W 1076 before it was decided that some agent could not use it effectivly. The 10mm is the all around semi automatic hand gun that will fill the semi auto hand gun versitality. My 2 cents [8D]
