Colt 1851 Navy w/ miss-spelling

My dad has an 1851 Navy with Colt miss-spelled as "COTL" on the barrel. Has anyone ever heard of such? Hoping it's not a fake...

It sounds like an unauthorized Belgian copy with "Colt" intentionally misspelled to circumvent copyright laws and dupe unsuspecting buyers. I've seen these in the past.

Please provide a complete description of all markings & post a picture if possible. Also, pull down the loading lever and look on the bottom of the barrel for proofmarks, particularly the letters "ELG" (possibly in an oval).

Are you sure its a genuine antique Colt Navy? Some of the reproduction Navy's have Colt intentionally mispelled as COTL so that they can't be passed off as genuine antique Colt Navy's.

We need pics and/or complete stampings and proofmarks to assess origin, age & value. However, if "COLT" is misspelled, it is definitely NOT a genuine Colt. Sorry.
