M70 Identification
I have made a previous post requesting M70 information.
After serious research, (information is nonexistant), I have aquired some information. "G" serial numbers start at approximately 870,000.
Pictures in the 'Winchester Custom Shop' catalog indicate serial #s in the G125,000 area. It is assumed that the "G" serial numbers under G870,000 would be from the Custom Shop. All of the Custom Shop rifles appear to be CRF. There appears to be a small number of low serial number "G" series CRF rifles that were manufactured before the introduction of the 'Classic' series.
The rifle I have is a M70SA, Classic Featherweight, .308 Win that was produced in 1984, according to Winchester records. No other info is available from Winchester. This rifle appears identical to the 'North American Big Game' shown in the Winchester catalog, except for the engraving. Serial Number is G160,XXX.
The 'Blue Book' lists a 'Custom Classic Featherweight' as being made in the 1980s and states the only way to identify is by better than normal wood. I would also presume these rifles have serial numbers in the G100,000 range.
Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!
