How close can I expect headspace to be in rebarreling using a takeoff
barrel?

    With factory firearms, it's impossible to say 'how close?' because there is no set method to the timing of the threads on the barrel tenon and the threading in the front receiver ring. In essence, without timing the threads, you have a "less to none" chance of the timing (and therefore the headspace - added) being exactly correct. But, you might get close although it would be extremely unlikely.

    There is only one custom receiver manufacturer that times their threads and gunsmiths don't need the receiver to thread and chamber a barrel for one of these when they know the basic dimensions.

    I guess that I should be more specific with some terminology...

    The "timing' that I was referring to is when the threads are started and stopped at the same place on the receiver and the barrel tenon each and every time. What this means is that all barrels will screw into every receiver and lock up at the point every time. In this manner, the headspace is always the same and most importantly, repeatable.

    I've installed taks-offs on a few of these (post 64), headspace is usualy pretty close but timing is another matter (having the sights at top dead center is nice). you have a one in 360 chance of being right on.

    error on the side of caution. Have a gunsmith check the headspace and make any "adjustments". Nothing like a good ole blown case-head to make for a bad weekend,..or longer.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
