Danish SA M-1 Garand selling value.

I am thinking of selling my Danish M-1. It is a Sprinfield Armory and its serial number is 653XXX. I was told it was a CMP but never saw a certificate. It has a 1959 VAR barrel and is in pretty good condition. The stock is lightly dinged and has no markings except for the rifles serial number stamped into it. I had it appraised at they said it was worth $850 with a fair market value of $800. When I checked what M-1s that were not Danish were going for, it about this price and I wonder if it is not realistic to try and sell it for this much. Does having this low of a serial number help increase its value that much? I could send pictures of it to anyone if would it help get a better feel for what Garand owners would actually consider paying for it. Any help to get a better feel of what a fair price is would be great.

    CMP is still selling Danish M1's, & they are asking $500. Your serial # is not really that low, & besides, your rifle is a refinished Mixed Parts Mongrel, so that won't help.

    If the Muzzle Wear & Throat Wear measurements are good, the VAR barrel may bring a slight premium. At best, figure $400-500.

    I sold a very similar rifle at auction a few months back for $630. I couldn't get $550 for it locally, but I threw it up on auction here and it brought more than I expected. It would take a sucker to pay $800

    Your rifle is a mixmaster. If it still has a lockbar sight that's worth a small premium. The best thing that you described is the VAR barrel. If the MZ is less than 2 and the TE is less than 3 then a JC Garand match shooter might pay a little more for it. My estimate would be $500-$650 depending on the availability of VAR barrels. Some guys in JC Garand match shooting circles are queer for them. If you find one of those guys you will get the $650; otherwise I'd realisticly say $575. Beach

    Great guys. Thanks for the info. I really wondered about it being worth $800 with other non-Danish M-1s going for about the same. Most parts are Springfield and the rear sight is not a lock-bar but a more modern sight. I have one of the Scott Duff books about them so I have a rough idea on the dates the parts were made but no real clue about the realistic sale value.

    Gun runner, none of the rack grade danes had VAR barrels. When the CMP had the service grades they were $475, they have been out for a year or more.
