estimate on a stock build

I bought a couple pieces of purpleheart wood home with me from Iraq. Wondering if anybody can give me a rough estimate on what I can expect to pay to have a gunstock made. Probably would be for a Remington 700 or a 700ML, or a Ruger 7717. I'm not talking anything real exotic or fancy, just a good working stock. Thanks

    From my experience with purpleheart, it is 1) very difficult to work- especially as much as will be done to make a stock, because it is superhard (my chisels have purpleheart handles) and 2) pretty heavy in sizes that will end up being a gunstock.

    While beautiful beyond words, I'm not sure I would have a gunstock made of it. My 2

    I would imagine that it could be as much as twice what a Walnut or laminate would cost, because of the extra time involved.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    codenamepaul, you're right on both counts. It is extremely hard, and just as heavy. It's also very expensive. It's hard to imagine that the army uses it to put on their 40 foot lowboy trailers just so they can drive tanks over it, but the army says it is the only wood that will stand up to their abuse. They buy it in full size 2" X 10" X 17' long, and each one of them boards costs $425. I guess I wouldn't know what too do with it if I didn't have a gunstock made out of it.

    Just for grins try contacting a few stockmakers, Boyd's would be my first choice, nice people to deal with, informative and reasonable.

    He Dog, I don't know how much you need for pistol grips, but I have 2 pieces that are 2" X 10" by about 40". There is no way I'll ever use both pieces for gunstocks. Probably can't afford it, but I could cut you off a little chunk if you want a piece. Let me know, and I'll e-mail you my address so you can get me yours, and I'll send you a little.

    Contact Winig (sp), they will machine your wood into a stock from one of there patterns (you will have to do the final inlet) or you could contact Chic Worthing http://webpages.charter.net/cworthing/ (beautiful workmanship, but be prepaired to spend some ca$h, his stocks start at $3500 plus the wood).
    IOW it can run from reasonable to very expensive, depending on what your after.

    Also do a search for Richard's Microfit; they are on the Web. I buy all of my stocks from them and they are reasonably priced. I don't know if they will cut your wood though.

    In good conscience, I would not recommend Richard's Microfit for any work anymore. Since the original owner sold the shop, there isn't much of any worth coming out of it. Save your money and have someone who really cares about stockmaking, make your stock.

    Wenig's was mentioned before, I think, and Fred is a superb stockmaker but very proud of his work, if you know what I mean. He's on the list above.

    Call around and see what they have to say. Then stop back here and let us know what you decided.

    Thanks for the offer, I am not much of a woodworker, and probably would not pay to have it done, but I was suggesting you have handgun grips made to match your stock. I would talk to Boyd's, I don' know that they will work from your wood, but hey maight and they make some fine stocks (many of the manufacturers stocks are actually made by them. I especially like the JRS Classic.
