remington 51 experts
why was the gun so popular? because its rare and was made in small quantities or becuse it performed well. how does it stack up against a colt 32 pocket? thanks in advance.

Pederson, the designer for Remington at the time designed it. John Browning called him a genius.
The novel delayed blowback system is claimed to result in less recoil.
He spent a great deal of time on the ergonomics of grip shape and angle which has since been copied by many gunmakers.
I believe it is thinner than the Colt 1903 & 1908 and the German PPKs and has a much better grip feel. It looks like the Browning 380 but with a better grip.
This pistol is about the most instinctive pointing handgun out there.
There are no screws on it and it is held together by novel interlocking methods.
If you examine it you will see there's no excess metal. All parts are
highly machined. Some say unnecessarily so.
Overseas,I kept one in my pocket or shoulder holster in addition to a 1911 on the belt or an M2 carbine everywhere I went.
I bought a primo one a few years ago to replace that old friend.0 -
I had a .380, Model 51 years ago. What V35 says about it is correct, as far as the design and ergonomics are concerned. It struck me though, as being way more complicated and fragile then the straight blowback Colt .380 Model 1908, that I owned at the same time. In fact I broke the extractor of the Model 51 while shooting it. I finally was able to get my hands on a original replacement. It was quite interesting to say the least, in getting that little floating breechblock/bolt out of the slide to replace the extractor.

Hello Bobski a REMINGTON P51 is to pocket pistols what a high standard is to 22 target pistols IMHO it is the best carr gun for a old skinny man and if you shoot one and the go to a PPK you will think the ppk is a HARDBALL gun. BY the way have you seen the results from the TEAM HARDBALL match from PERRY this year. 0 -

If you get one, get back with us for takedown info. You don't want to break anything.
To remove the floating breechblock, remove slide, barrel w/slidespring. Then push breechblock to rear against the fp spring and lift up its' rear end. The breechblock will unhook and come forward and lift out. Widmer makes replacement extractors.
I've owned two '51s that never needed any parts but I never shot them more than a few hundred rounds each or used hot handloads. A few people have broken that little floating breechblock and they are hard to find.0 -
I picked up a 51 in .380 at an estate auction this spring for $130. No finish, but no pitting either. I took it out along with a Colt 1903 in .32 and the Remington melted my heart. In .380, I'll carry the Rem. before my Mauser HSc. It's one of those guns that just "feels right". Also, the safety on the 51 is not as awkward for me as the Colt or HSc, though it's still not as natural as a 1911 type. Try a Llama small frame for the best of both words.
