Springfield model 1866 45/70 caliber rifle

I recently inherited a Springfield model 1866 45/70 caliber rifle.

I appears to have never been fired and is in excellent condition.

Can anyone tell me the value of this rifle.

    The Model 1866 is known as the "Allin Conversion". It was a Civil War muzzle loader that was converted to a 50/70 centerfire breechloader.

    As these rifles now are almost 140 years old, and so many things could have happened to them over the intervening years to influence their value. It would be in your best interest to obtain a hand-on inspection/appraisal from a knowledgeable/honest collector or dealer. Even if you have to pay for it.

    For what it is worth, the 45-70 was not adopted until the year 1873 (coincident with the introduction of the Model 1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifle). If your Model 1866 has a 45-70 barrel, it is either an arsenal rework, or a gunsmith special.
