attaching sling
Purchased a repo Japanese leather sling for my Arisaka type 99. The leather is so stiff I don't have enough a** to fasten the straps. Any thoughts on how to properly soften up the leather. I'm not a leather worker and don't want to ruin a good repo[:D]

A forum search on leather softening/treatment would yield you a lot of information. There are many different methods recommended by forum members, but what has always worked well for me (especially in the summer!)is vaseline. Generously rub it onto both sides of the leather and let it sit out in the sun. It will soak into the leather and soften it up. Two or three treatments may be required. Then wipe off any excess with a clean, dry cloth, and the leather will take on a nice luster. 0 -
I'd recommend using lanolin or other natural based leather treatment and stay away from petroleum based products. I've heard of using olive oil but am skeptical about applying anything that would rot or support bacterial growth.

I always use neatsfoot oil. Soak it good and rub it in.

Someone on the forums said Neatsfoot oil will rot leather. I have a 4 horse harness hanging in our barn that's over 100yrs old, and still usable. Neatsfoot is all thats ever been put on it.
Roll the sling up to fit in a coffee can, fill it with neatsfoot to cover the sling and put it on the stove with a low heat for an hour. Hang it in the sun for a day, and then wipe all the excess off. It'll not only be more pliable, but it'll look more original!

The competition shooters say neats foot oil will cause leather to be come too soft and stretch. For display purposes it should work well. On another forum where there is more discussion about collectable and antique items, Pecard's Antique Leather treatment always gets lots of recommendations. 0 -
