problems with an after market SKS mag

purchased a 25 or 30 rd mag for my chinese SKS afew years ago at a local gun show and cannot get more than six rounds in it. any suggestions on what the problem is or any possible solutions?

    Is it dented? Try pushing the follower down to see what is stopping it.

    My personal experience is that most of these conversions are junk.

    Buy stripper clips, and keep the original mag. I have tried just about every aftermarket hi-cap mag available, and they are all junk.

    I own USA, ProMag, "ChiNa", and some generic mags from various sources that all work fine. Is there any brand name on that mag?
    It may be that it needs disassembly and removal of a cardboard price tag that got lodged in it, and is keeping the follower from moving smoothly stem-to-stern.

    was it new when you bought it.. i bought acouple of used one at an acution awhile back and they had been blocked so they could only hold 5 rounds took them apart and took out the plug and they worked fine after that

    rox2bme, in my area its hard to find a metal mag at a gun show because the dealers have had so many problems with them. the plastic zytel ones is the way to go. but on some sks's especially the yugo's you have to file down the plastic to match the crappy metal mags.its not hard and its no big deal, just use a flat file and copy the shape of the metal mag.the plastic mags are square at the opening or the top, where the follower is. when you put them in, the bolt wont even close until you file it. if you compare them side by side you will know what the hell im talking about. these mags work great after that and it might sound like a pain but its very easy. let me know if this helps, thanks, redman

    Maybe kingjoey will chime in, but I gave him 5 USA brand 30rd SKS mags that didn't work worth a poop in my SKS.

    He disassembled them cleaned them and got them to work with his.

    IMHO, forget detachable mags and SKS rifles.

    I have "smithed" on several of these , Most are JUNK , never really have had good luck with these .

    Aftermarket hi capacity for the SKS can be tempermental at best.
    'Redman' is on target, but I have not had any success with the plastic crap. Most metal mags will work OK, but many must be 'adjusted' a little.

    Changing the mag requires what I guess is an aquired touch. My podnuh is a jarhead that can't change a duckbill mag without at least 3 tries, or giving up. It ticks him off when I pick it up and fold it in there on the first try.

    Being honest though, if I had to depend on it, I would probably install a 30 round duckbill, but then just re-charge it with stripper clips. Works well, and a finicky mag is only useful at the range.
