Armalite AR 7 Explorer 22 survival rifle

I picked up a armalie ar7 explorer rifle. It's the 22 where everything fits into the stock. This one was made in costa mesa calif. It's in very good shape. I believe they were the frist company to make these. My question is thier any collectabilty ( is thier such a word?) to these? Thankyou Beltfed

I don't know if I'd call them "collectable". But they do have their followers.

Not really collectable. Range in value from $145-$220. But a tremendous idea on the concept of an inexpensive survival rifle. Easily fits in a backpack and with a brick of .22LR a person could live on rabbits for a long long time. While I am not an adherent of the SHTF scenario....it really is cheap insurance to have one of them in your basement. Beach 0 -
The Armalites will become collectable. Armalite made them in the early sixties and then sold the design to Charter Arms who really got the ball rolling.
I don't know the numbers made but I have 108319.
Just hang on to it.

I have the charter arms and it sometimes fires FA, until I give it a real good cleaning that is[;)].

funny, mine performs great... accurate & reliable. Plus it's about the easiest gun to pack just about anywhere. Educate me on why it's much inferior to the Papoose...0 -
Yes they are collectable I recently sold just an Armalite Barrel for 78.00 The stock by itself can bring 60-70 so you can figure there is a demand for them

It's made of pot metal, its rear sight sucks, the rear sight is not on the barrel, that of the Papoose is. As the cheesy metal of the AR quickly wears, your accuracy will go into the toilet, because the receiver will no longer 'point" in the same direction your barrel does. The lockwork is soft metal, it will soon wear, shear off, or flat out break in half. If you "think" it's ok to have a a rear sight with an "x' in it, for a screw to move around in, to "adjust" the peep sight, you are delusional about gun quality. 0 -
Wow clopp, you must have a side deal with Marlin to be so negative about a gun called a "survival rifle" versus the sterling example of the gunmakers' craft called the "Papoose".
Armalite designed the first ones to be manufactured out of aircraft grade aluminum (the same stuff your Maglite is made out of), to be easily stowable in a cockpit, FLOAT, and be chambered in 22Hornet/410 in an attempt to give the operator as much latitude in caliber choice as possible.
The Papoose is not a "survival rifle", nor should it be compared to one.
After Armalite sold the design to Charter Arms, some early ones were threaded incorrectly, which gave rise to the "cheap gun" rumors. They sold over 11,000,000 of them in the 18 or so years Charter made 'em.
Now the torch has been passed to Henry Repeating Arms, and they've pimped it so bad that they make one in shiny silver with a "chrome" polymeric-covered barrel! Don't know how you'd E&E with a silver gun.......

I have always liked the idea of this type of rifle. The concept is a good one. From all the people I have talked to and have read posts from it is not a very accurate rifle. Then again for what it was intended is it accurate enough? Even those that say it is not accurate, they still say that they still want one. Go figure. I believe this rifle is a better mouse trap that needs just a little more development to be (the mouse trap). My 2 cents PS: I plan on owning one [8D]
