CAST BULLETS
As I'm new to reloading, this may be a basic question, but here it is. I've been looking around for some inexpensive bullets for plinking. (40 S&W) I've noticed that all the cast bullets I've come across are sized at .401 rather than the .400 that the commercially available bullets are sized at. Is this to provide a better gas seal with the softer compounds? Or is it for another reason that I am overlooking? Thanks for your help!!

Gas checks are not needed unless your using soft lead and running them fast.
Normally a hard cast bullet is OK on it's own, but again it depends on the hardness.
Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.0 -
What they said . Use a wide flat meplat with plain base. I use Lead Bullet Technology(LBT) 300 gr cast.

Hi,
I mould my own from wheel weights and use the Lee semi-wadcutter bullet. This is in the style of the Keith bullet and has worked well. I have not had to use a gascheck with these as the wheel weights are an extremely hard alloy and do not lead the barrel.

Ditto on the gas checks and Keith shapes.
I have not found the checks to make much difference in my 44 mag loads. By the time the load with big pills is that hot, my groups started spreading out. The gas check MAY have helped reduce leading a little, but to keep my groups tighter I had to slow down a bit anyway.
With a relatively decent placement on deer I either see them quiver and drop or I follow a short blood trail. A poorly placed shot worked for me once, but it sure tore up some good meat.
PS - The heavy Keith type bullets that are my pistol preference would not feed well in my Winchester lever gun. The OAL was right at the maximum, and was probably the problem. The Win lever is gone now anyway.

Only way to know for sure what diameter you need is to slug the bore and measure. If you don't want to do that stick with .430 to start, see how well they shoot and go from there.
