Taurus Model PT92AR Beretta Copy, Opinions
Looking for opinions on the Taurus PT 92 AR 9mm Stainless clone of the Beretta 92F/S. Has anyone had a lot of experience with these? Considering it will be used by a lady with minimal firearm experience, would one be adequate for home defense?

Mine works just fine and feeds any kind of ammo. 100% reliable. Accuracy is good enough for government work. Should be fine for for a lady. Point and shoot with minimal recoil. Safety on with around in the chamber is how I would go. Just flick off the thumb safety and pull the trigger.. Just my .02... Good luck. 0 -
I've shot one, though not "extensively".
They work great, though you don't have the decocking safety. (You either decock manually, or go cocked-and-locked).
Caveat is that exactly like the Beretta, the grips are big and fat, and the trigger reach is long.
Therefore it might *not* be a good gun for a woman with small hands. She'll have to try it and make sure it fits her properly.
For home defense for someone with minimal firearm experience, might I suggest a revolver? Easier to use and more reliable.0 -
I have a couple of the Taurus 99s and a 92, and 2 Beretta 92fs. I like the Taurus better. It is not as well finished as the Beretta, but it is a stronger design. They don't have the problem with slides cracking like the Beretta does. I like being able to carry it cocked and locked like a 1911. I like having the saftey on the frame instead of on the slide. I usually replace the Taurus barrel with a Beretta barrel. It fits tighter and is more accurate. I have a 99 that I purchased used about 8 years ago, that I have used for IDPA and IPSC competion. It has over 10,000 rounds on it and the only failure I have had was the rear sight broke in half during a match. Since it has a life time warrenty, I sent it to Taurus. They replaced the sight and returned it in a week. 0 -
Owned one for two years...sent it back to the factory twice, finally sold it. Completely reliable, but would not print anywhere near point of aim. Best I could ever get was 4 inches right and 3 inches low at 25 yards.
I have fired others over the years and mine seems to be the exception to the rule.

Huh? Why not just have a decent set of sights installed by a smith? Or do it yourself, it's very simple. 0 -
Because that was not the problem.....It was the way the frame was cut and how the barrel sat in the frame....It had nothing to do with the sights.....Not so simple Huh....

I've owned a Taurus PT92 for more than 10 years, shot a ton of ammo through it and never had a problem and accuracy was always pretty good. I upgraded my rear sight to an adjustable sight though. But the factory sight I had no problems with. More than adequate for the task of home defense.

I just bought my Tarus PT92 AFS 3 days ago. This is my 2nd Taurus PT92 and my first 92 in stainless. My wife grabbed it and liked it, but commented on the fact that it was a little wide. I carried my first PT92 on duty. I suggest 147 grain HP's for defense. If it's for the house try GLAZER Safety Slugs. Glazers won't over penetratrate. TAP ammo is good for use indoors so the neighbors won't get hit insteadt of your intruder.
I love mine. Rapid fire groups at 25 yards were pretty tight. They measured out to about 3 to 3.5 inches. My favorite handgun will always be my trusty Springfield 1911 in 45 ACP, but this Taurus PT92 will doo the job just as well in a pinch. Darn good piece IMHO.
PS Remember..........147 grain HP ammo for defense. Heavy 9mm is a decent man stopper.0 -
The Taurus PT 92 AR is a great gun, and btw to correct another post it "does" have a decocker safety. The AR has all the bells and whistles that the PT series has to offer excluding an adjustable rear sight. This is a floating barrel design adapted from the famous Beretta P series. It is accurate enough to be used for personal defense and will use the +p ammunition. I have personally put over 2500 rounds through mine and have seen minimal wear (I do clean my gun after every day of shooting so that might be part of it) For the price I would say this is the best bang for your buck as far as full framed 9mm pistols go. You can even purchase up to 17 round clips without them protruding from the bottom of the grip.
