Savage 24 Questions

I was wondering if someone can give me some answers on these little combination guns about the release controls to open the barrels.
On most of these i have seen it is a top mounted lever.
However i have seen some that were mounted on the side of the receiver.
And recently at a gun show i saw one that had the release in front of the trigger guard.
Is one style better than the other??
In other words is one more durable or less problematic as far as wear or breakage is concerned?
Also most i have seen have the barrel selector on top of the hammer.
But i have seen some with a button on the side of the receiver.
Again is one better than the other in regards to durability?
And since i have not seen many with the trigger guard release was this the later or earlier models??
What problems are these little combo's known to have if any??
I have ben thinking of getting me one of these neat little combo's in 22 mag/20 gauge.

    THESE ARE 'ECONOMY' GUNS AND WHILE THEY WORK OK THEY ARE NOT TOP OF THE LINE GUNS. I'VE HAD TO REPAIR QUITE A FEW OF THEM OVER THE YEARS AND THEY ARE ABOUT THE SAME (TOP LEVER/SIDE SELECTOR/PUSH BUTTON/ FIRING PIN SELECTOR/ ECT.). KEEP IN MIND THAT IF YOU MOUNT A SCOPE ON THEM YOU AREN'T SUPOSE TO FIRE THE SHOTGUN BARREL (POSSIBLE EXCEPTION IS THE .222/.223 COMBO. THEY HAD DIFFERENT SCOPE MOUNTS).

    I have three now and have owned several others. I haven't had any big problems with any of them. The top lever opening ones are my favorite but not necessarily better. I also like those with the button style barrel selector but don't think it's as sturdy as a selector on the hammer. All the 24's I have seen have a broken firing pin return spring. No big deal, it breaks the first time you fire the gun I believe. When the action is closed it pushes the firing pin back into the receiver anyway. I would buy by price and condition as these are getting more expensive every year. I have used a scope successfully on my .410/.22 mag. model with no problems. I use a 1 inch full-size scope with see-through mounts, not the cheap .22 scopes. I sight the scope for the .22 mag barrel and use the iron sights for the shotgun, sighting it to shoot slugs. With shot, it's accurate enough, but I seldom shoot it with shot loads. I still hunt squirrels with a plain iron-sighted .22/.410 Stevens. It was the first gun I ever shot and is still a favorite of mine. Prices vary greatly on M-24's. I have bought them for around $100 and seen them priced at about $400. Be sure to shop around and check the prices they are being SOLD for on GUNBROKER, not just the ASKING prices. Good luck on your search. I hope you find a great one!

    First gun I ever bought was a 24 in 22/20. Paid a whopping $89 for it in 1978. Never had a problem with mine. Great little squirrel gun. Mine has the top mounted lever to break open and the barrel selector on the hammer.

    Mike Wiskey, I have a scoped Savage 24 30-30/12 ga. and I shoot 3" magnum buckshot through it all the time. It actually groups good with the shotgun when using the scope. My question is, why are you not supposed to shoot the shotgun with a scope mounted? It came drilled and tapped for a scope with no warning not to shoot the shotgun while it is scoped. Enlighten me.

    The rimfire versions are marked that they you should shoot the shotgun with a scope attached. I assume that it is because the grooved scope mount does not have the strength of a D+T one.

    I personally like the top lever hammer selector models myself
