what does foot pounds per square inch mean when a bullets energy is calculated and what is the formula to find it

    In the English system of measurements a foot pound is a unit of energy. One foot pound is the force of one pound pushing over a distance of one foot ( or 10 lb over 0.1 ft etc.) It is force times distance, both in the same direction. Per square inch is just this much energy per square inch.

    To state it a little differently, a foot pound is the force needed to push 1 pound one foot. An inch pound is the force need to puch one pound one inch and so on.

    The actual formula is E=WxV(squared) / K(450395). Use grains for weight square the velociy and divide by 450395.
    example: a 150 gr. bullet @ 2800 fps produces about 2611.041 ft. lbs energy. I don't believe 'persquare inch is factored into this but it may be.

    or the other way: V(V)/450240(W)=E

    Velocity squared, divided by 450,240, multiplied by bullet weight in grains.

    You'll get the same results with either formula. I found this one easier to memorize.

    Save the seals-club a liberal instead.
