Yes I know old but i just love to shoot it
My Father's Model 59 that I recently aquired has seen some hard use and has a problem with the extractor missing the casing once or twice every mag. Does anybody have any suggestions to fix it or should i just trade it in?

The extractor design went through a few changes on these guns. I don't have access to my parts catalog at the moment, but if I remember correctly a late 5900 series extractor will work in your pistol.
If it were me I'd hang on to my heirloom by having the newer style exractor and a fresh spring installed. This requires no fitting and isn't a major job.0 -

You might contact Smith & Wesson about it. They might just offer to repair the gun for free. If they won't, I can put you onto a repair station in Comanche, Texas.

Well I called S&W and they have no parts but they said i could send it in for adjustment but it would cost me. Maybe i'll get the 5900 extractor and see if it fits 0 -
I purchased a used stainless S&W 5906 and was sad to learn that it had a feeding problem. I am in no way a gunsmith but I do have a little mechanical ability and I finally noticed that the extractor was at fault (I did this simply by comparing what my other 5900 series guns did when feeding). I tried to buy a new extractor from Brownells as well as thru my local dealer but was told that the part was only sold to a licensed gunsmith and not to individuals since the extractor always needed fitting.
I didn't want to pay the high price for this so I traded the gun to the dealer (he knew about the problem so no trickery on my part) for another gun.
I have a 1970-80 S&W 559 series and the gun looks almost exactly like the 5900 series. But the extractor is totally different from a more modern 5900 series and will absoutely not interchange if that helps any.

Well I ordered the extractor, pin, and spring from e-gunparts, and I hope that fixes the problem, but on a side note does anybody have any idea of what the gun is worth if I were to trade it in?
