velocity question
what would be the aproximate velocity of ultra-max cowboy loads out of my 18 in barrle using 200 grain RNFL, there lead cast, also they are factory loads so i have no info on the load of them.
Oh yes the are .44 special

what is the approx. velocity of a HMS lead semi-wadcutter .44 magnum cartride 0 -
What weight bullet? Is HMS an ammo manufacturer? 0 -
sorry 240 grain and yes 0 -
Hi Gunz,
IMHO there is still one factor missing to provide you with estimates of velocity. I am also assuming this is not a gas check bullet.
Is the HMS brand a hard cast lead alloy bullet or a softer alloy? IMHO, this will make the biggest difference as to estimating the velocity attaianable with these bullets.
If the bullets are of hard cast alloy, velocity on these could be somewhere around 1200 to 1400 fps without a problem. If velocities are raised too high with a lead bullet, gas cutting can occur. If they are softer alloy, maybe only 800 to 900 fps. You may have to test various loads in your firearm and observe the results.
Other factors that may influence whether or not these bullets will lead the bore of your firearm include the type of lubricant, the diameter of the bullets, the actual diameter of the bore of your firearm, and whether the bore of your firearm has been lapped or polished.
I mould my own bullets for both 357 and 44 magnum out of wheel weights and then quench them out of the mould. This makes for a very hard alloy and these bullets never lead any of my revolvers at 1400 fps velocity.
Attached is a link which will provide you with some loading data where you can determine what velocities are possible with lead bullets. Just scan the list for LSWC.
