TAURUS TRIAD - They finally made it!
I've been asking for this for a long time. A double-action revolver that will shoot 9mm/.38 Spl/.357 Mag. There have been many unsuccessful attempts at this over the years, such as the Medusa, but looks like Taurus has finally got it:

Thank you Taurus! And it doesn't even require a different cylinder! Unfortunately it does still require a moon/star clip for 9mm, but that is to be expected with a rimless cartridge.

"Stellar clips?" What in the hell is up with that?!?
Saying it could fire ".357 AND .38" as a selling point is like trying to make the fact that your .44 Magnum can also shoot .44 Special a big deal!
ALL .357 Magnums can fire .38 Special!

I believe moon clips go around the outer edge of the cylinder in a circle of half-circle (full-moon or half-moon). I'm assuming the "stellar" clips they mention come out of the center like a star.
I think this is the only way they can get the rimless 9mm cartridges to stay put and have the proper head spacing. That is, unless they go to a more expensive invention, like the Medusa which has pins in the cylinder, as I understand it. But I don't think Taurus has many NASA engineers working for them. [:D]
I don't think it is so bad, EMM. At least it is a .357/.38 that COULD shoot 9mm, if necessary. And it is under $500 retail, compared to the $900 Medusa that I hear of.

According to Taurus they are "stellar" clips. They are shaped similar to the extractor plate and go over the extractor plate when using 9mm or .38 Super. They also are making a 7 shot Tracker Triad model that will also chamber .38 Special, .38 Super, 9mm and .357 Magnum. I might just have to get one of each! 0 -

I'm brand new to the forum (actually my first gun forum).
My question is does anyone think the stellar clips might work with .357/.38 revolvers made by other manufacturers? If so, that could be a great way to make other revolvers even more versatile.0 -

I think this has to do with their shape to distinguish them from the standard "moon" clips.
I'd love to have one of these (or its equivalent), but unfortunately Taurus guns aren't legal in in MA.
Anyone know if there is a way to retrofit a standard .357 Smith to take 9mm ammo? (In a way that say, doesn't cost more than buying a whole new gun).0 -
Welcome to the forum, Teachme.
I think the stellar clips are probably manufacturer specific, and perhaps even model specific. I would imagine that they would have to conform to the shape and features of each model's cylinder. Given the difference in extractor shapes, and possibly cylinder diameter, I would think you would want to be sure to get a stellar clip for that specific brand or model of gun.
Hopefully if the Taurus Triad becomes popular then we will be able to get aftermarket clips that are specifically made for it. Although, I have no idea how much the factory clips will cost and what is their expected lifetime and durability.

beantown, I asked a similar question a while back on this forum. I got a variety of answers. Basically it sounds like it is possible, but you would have to get a gunsmith that could swap out your cylinder for a special made one that is designed to fit 9mm cartridges. Remember, S&W did make 9mm revolvers for a while. But it would probably be expensive to get a hold of the right kind of cylinder and to get a smith to insert and tune it. Besides, it probably wouldn't shoot very accurately if the gun wasn't designed for 9mm to begin with.
Also, there is a problem with the 9mm cartridge being tapered vs. the .38 Spl/.357 Mag cartridges being straight from rim to bullet. This can cause difficulty with getting proper fit in the cylinder and proper head spacing. I'm hoping that Taurus has considered all of these factors in the production of the Triad. They should be showing up sometime next month, I'm looking forward to getting a hold of one.

If you have a heavy duty .357 like a S&W mod 27 or 28 you can shoot .357s,.38 spls and .38 supers. [8D] 0
