i want to know what the penetration or a 150 grain core-lock with a muzzle velocity of 2900 fps is?

That is totally dependant on the bullet used. Most soft points expand fast and slow down quickly. A FMJ will penetrate a lot, but does not produce a large wound. I shoot the Barnes TSX 150gr from mine. Some may say it's not advised, but I would not hesitate to use that round on elk. To date I have only taken whitetails with it, but the damage is incredible.
Even the fastest expanding bullet should exit deer size game.0 -

they will not penetrate 1/4" A-400 armor plate at 200 yards. they will penetrate at 100.

more than enough for most game in NA out to 300yds I would think,..other than maybe a big hog or bull elk.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Need more info. My handloaded 162 gr. AP rounds will punch 3/4" mild steel at 30 yards when fired from my G-3; the tips of the steel cores poke through the backside of the plate when fired from my 16" AR-10A2. But it is anybody's guess with expanding bullets.
For comparison, the same bullet fired from my 24" M700 .30-06 will penetrate 1" mild steel plate at the same distance. MV is 2974 FPS.

i've recovered remington 150 grain core-lokt bullets from both moose and caribou from my 308. the damage to the caribou meat was pretty bad so i've since switched to 180 grain bullets with slightly less damage to edible meat. with remington 150 core-lokt ammo i shot a small bull moose at about 150 yards right behind the shoulder and recovered the bullet on the other side of its shoulder right under the skin. i was impressed with the penetration for 150 grain bullets, but i'm pretty much shooting only 180 grain handloads and remington core-lokts now in both my 308 and 30-06, just to have the extra penetration if needed. just my opinion.

If "regular expanding" bullets don't penetrate steel very well I'd sure like to know what makes all those holes in the roadsigns out on those desert highways.....

The new ones are aluminum. The old ones are steel. And pretty tough if you can imagine that. I have never personally shot a standing roadsign but have been given replaced ones by a friend in the local Road dept. where I'm from. A Remington Core-lokt 100 gr. in .243 didn't penetrate at 400 yds. I think that ammo was pretty weak though,...still do.
Still, I have no criteria as to what pentration level the Core-Lokt bullet is supposed to achieve. I do know what the penetration levels are for the M2 and M80 type ammunition is, but that isn't important to this question.

Aren't those signs made of aluminum? A 308 is a great hunting round, a 150 grain core lokt will suffice for deer, hogs, elk, black bear just about any north american game species. If you are looking for how far it will penetrate into steel, rock, concrete or hardened targets you'll have to specify what exactly you are looking for.
