Colt finish question Coltguard?
I found a Python with a very unusual finish. It's gray and smooth, almost like a painted finish. I'm used to the 1911s, Commanders with electroless nickel which kinda textured and usually a little gold colored. But this is very different. It's smooth and straight gray.
I thought "Coltguard" was the e-nickel, but is this gray Python finish Coltguard instead? Does this sound like a factory finish?

I thought Coltguard, e-nickel and satin nickel were all the same. I would be weary of a smooth gray finish. 0 -
"Coltgard" is the name Colt used to market the Electroless Nickle finish. You can see some texture in that finish as it appears to the eye. If smooth like a gray/silver painted surface, its probably something else.

I have no idea if this applies to the Python you have seen? I have seen firearms in the past with similar gray finishes. What they were, was originally a nickel plated firearm, that have been electronically denickeled.
My WAG would be that the Python was originally, electronically nickel plated. It had a bad encounter with Hoppes #7 or some similar gun cleaner containing ammonia, ( they look like s**t when this happens ) then the previous owner decided to make the finish at least look uniform, and had it denickeled.

Colt offered the Python in an electroless nickel that was a flat gray/silver finish. They also offered it in a non-polished stainless steel.
