not unless u feel like getting ur meat ground up to hamburgers by the time the deer hits the ground. hahaha absolutly not, 50 bmg averages a 700 grain bullet, i use a 100 grain and a 140 grain for deer. really the only reason u would need a rifle like that is to target shoot, unless you intend of practising taking out cars on the highway. people will argue with that and say they hunt with their .50bmg but a 7X57 mauser has taken elephants. (my rifle i use 140 grain in) a guy took close to 1700 elephants with one in the early 1900's i think.

gunz forever....seeing some of your posts ( and I mean absolutely no offense we all have to start somewhere ) that your not very familiar with the ballistics surrounding various cartridges.....what helped me is looking at ballistic information out of reloading manuals and online ammunition manufacturers this will give you at least a basic idea

Exactly! gunzforever - get a decent book like "Cartridges Of The World" by F.C. Barnes. Its about 20 bucks at almost any gun shop or on Amazon, etc. It covers pretty much every cartridge ever made and has complete dimensions for many and ballistics for most every one, including wildcat cartridges, proprietary cartridges and even obsolete cartridges for handguns, rifles, machine guns and shotguns, both military and commercial, world wide.

Considering bullet construction and energy, the exit hole will be the same size as the entry and the bullet will probably only loose 50 FPS during penetration, so you'd better have one heck of a backstop. That said, if you want to lug a 30 pound rifle around all day, go ahead. I'll stick to my .25-06 for deer, and that includes monster mulies.

The man that Andy12390 is refering to was W.D. "Karamojo" Bell and yes, he killed nearly 1700 pachyderms with smaller calibers. If my memory serves me correctly, his favorite was the 6.5mm with full patch(FMJ) bullets. He would get close to a herd, shoot the patriarch in the noggin and jump up on the carcass before proceeding to dispatch the rest with well placed head shots. Yes he was lucky, but he also knew about elephant anatomy and was a skilled hunter and rifle shot. Would I try this trick, NO. I use it simply to illustrate that skill in placing the bullet where it needs to go and having skills as a hunter are far more important than the equipment or caliber used. A 6mm to the heart/lung area is far better than a .50BMG to the tail feathers.
I agree 100% with the posts above about buying a few books like Cartridges of the World and P.O. Ackleys books on reloading. You will learn an invaluable amount about not only reloading, wildcat cartriges and the inventors, history of cartridge development, etc, but also about proper uses for each cartridge listed. Not to mention that if and when you ever try a .50 BMG you, especially after reading some ballistics on it, will need to have your A$$ strapped on and strapped down because you are going to feel some serious recoil. I suggest you keep your head back away from the scope a ways.
To what you need for deer? A .308 or 30-06 is good. Lighter magnums are good like the .264 Win, 7mm Rem, 7WSM, 7 SAUM etc. if you think you'll need to take longer shots. Although, some people I know go after deer with a .300 Win Mag and bigger.
Personally, I don't think that it's necessary to have all that power for deer. I have used the flat shooting .243 Win and .257 Rbts. to kill all of my deer.
I place importance on a cartidge choice this way, others may do it differently,:
1. Bullet placement. So, shoot what you can handle recoil-wise. Some lighter magnums still kick too much for some people. A whole lot of power in the wrong place is still the wrong place or no place at all.
2. Assuming your shooting is on, Bullet selection. Use good hunting bullets for hunting. They expand and transfer the most energy to the animal. Leave the FMJ's and varmint bullets at home when hunting deer. This also means know your loads! Don't exceed the performance range of a given bullet.
3. Power. Have enough power to put the animal down cleanly. Too much power can waste a lot of meat. Too much power and a really destructive bullet wastes even more meat.
I hope you do as the other posters have mentioned and get a reloading manual and do some reading...you'll appreciate it when you do. -Good luck

i hear that most of the 50 bmg rifles dont kick that much, about as much as a 12 gauge shotgun. but are extremely loud even with ear protection on.

Absolutely, it would be wise for you to hunt whitetail with a 50. It would be both outstanding and incredible entertainment for myself and others to see you in the field toting a 50 bmg around. Please don't let anybody tell you otherwise. 0 -
