ruger 77 bbl lenght accuracy
what is the span of accuracy from a ruger 77 .223 compact with a 16 1/2 bbl compared to the ultralight with a 20 inch bbl or a all weather with a 22 inch bbl or the target model with a 26 inch bull.
obviously the lighter bbl would not shoot like the bull bbl, but what accuracy do you give up for the light easy handling gun?
this would be a coyote gun, jackrabbit gun and possibly ground squirrels.

i have a 25-06 with the medium 26" barrel and it shoots 1/2-3/4" groups at 100. also had a 257 roberts lightweight and it shot almost hole for hole at 50 yards, the distance i sight in hunting rifles. anything over 100 yards here is rare and most shots are under 50. i saw a guy shooting one of the compacts in 308 at 50 yards and he was shooting decent groups, but the gun was loud! i was sitting 2 or 3 benches down and felt the concussion off of it. it was loud enough to turn me off of owning one.

Well that all depends on many factors not just barrel length . i dont own ruger rifles but have shot rifles with different barrel lenght as you stated i had 20 tubes shoot better than 26" it all varies a longer heavier barrel will beeasier to shoot because of the amount of mass but if your gonna just carry it around while you hunt AKA stalking then i lighter rifle may be better I would go with the 20 " IMHO still get good vel. and not as much muzzle blast as the 16" its a good compromise lenght in that caliber 0 -
So long as the tube is long enough to stabilize the bullet, barrel length will have no discernable effect on accuracy. However, if you are using open sights, a shorter barrel means a shorter sight radius, which will affect your ability to shot accurately. The only difference you should see going from a 16" to a 22" barrel of the same contour will be velocity.
*on a side note, there has been some change in the BR world where many have gone to shorter barrels (18-22") because they are more rigid than the 24"-28" tubes and have less "whip". But in the world of BR, it is thousandths of an inch that make the differnce between a trophy and a goose egg.

there is a formula in the book "Rifle Accuracy Facts" written by Harold Vaughn (the father of our balistic missle program in the U.S.) his resume is unquestionable. The formula determines the min dia a barrel must be to support it's weight over it's length. remember, the barrel is only attached by threads at one end,..so that point is bearing all the stresses of holding the barrel in place. Take a broom and hold it say half way up the handle and point it straight out using only one hand. Now, grab it at the end and try to hold it out straight with one hand,..that pressure you feel is the same action that takes place with a longer barrel. A barrel MUST increase in dia as it's length is increased to remain at the same rigidity as a shorter barrel that is thinner. The increased dia will help to support it's own weight over distance as gravity is trying to "bend" it.
as for BR barrels,..the Light Varmint and heavy Varmint class as well as Hunter class have much smaller weight limits compared to the 1000yd class. The smaller barrels are all that are needed for the shorter range shoots using very small chamberings (PPC's, BR's) The 1000yd guns can weight as much as another 5lbs, which allows longer and heavier barrels. This is due to the need for powder ignition room when magnum chamberings use heavy bullets and very slow powders to get maximum velocity with high BC bullets to get them through the wind and on paper at 1000yds. BUT, these barrels are larger at the muzzle than the LV, HV, HBR, class rigs.
I have a 22" barreled M77 MKII in 30-06 (factory rifle) and it is VERY accurate. It is well under 1moa at 100yds and can go 1/2moa when the shooter holds her right.[;)] If/when I burn it out,..I'll go back with another barrel of the same size and length.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
