Colt Marshall .45 LC
my friend was in a gun store and found a Colt SAA with "Marshall" written on the barrel. We cant find any history or background on the gun--I was thinking maybe it was for US Marshalls or some such. Anybody have any clue?

The spelling indicates the revolver has no connection with the U. S. Marshals as it is spelled with two l's.
There was a special limited edition Colt SAA made up for the employees of the U. S. Marshals Service in 1976 or 1977. These revolvers all were in .45 Colt cal and had 7 1/2 inch barrels. There were some 150 or so made in nickle finish and 400 or so made in case hardened and blue finish. These production figures are not exact. These pistols came with special serial numbers that were based on the buyers membership number in the U. S. Marshals Historical Society. Serial numbers will be either USM234 or 234USM if a members card number was 234. Each employee could buy one or two pistols. As I recall, the barrel had U.S.Marshal 1789 stamped in it and the employees name engraved on the backstrap. If the pistol meets the above description, it should be one of the limited production pistols. These were the first of the Third Generation SAA's.0 -
Betcha a dollar it is a Hawes single-action 'Western Marshal' or one of the other Hawes "Marshal" imports.

An acquaintance of mine owns one of the limited edition Colt SAAs which were made for members of the US Marshals Historical Society. It has the case hardened and blue finish, still in the box, never fired. It appears the cylinder has never been rotated, as there are no such marks to be seen. We're trying to determine a value for this revolver, but have had no luck in that regard. I can't find one for sale on the web, in fact this forum is the only place I've found any information about it at all. Does anyone have an idea about value for this gun, or how to determine its value? 0 -

scheib, I know of or was involved in some sales of these USMS revolvers. This information is quite old but I expect it will not be easy to determine current value due to the lack of transactions in these pistols. In the mid to late 1980's one of these with original nickle finish and NIB sold for $3,500.00. The mate to it and in NIB condition sold for $3,000.00. In the early 1990's a blue and casehardened one (NIB) sold for $950.00. The pistols came in a wooden presentation case and lack of the case would detract from value. 0 -
Cherry's is in Greensboro, NC. They do carry a lot of commerative firearms. I grew up about 2 miles from their store. 0 -
