C&R and Russian Makarov

OK i do know that the E.German and Original Russian Maks are C&R legal ,BUT ARE the imported ones with the adj.rear sights ???Although they actually are Russian Mfg.some folks have told me both yes and no And i looked in the ATF book i got with my license and it just says russian and EG maks. has anyone dealt with this before? I know that the modern ones dont really fall into the collectable or relic catagory ,But if i can buy one legally with my C&R ,I figure what the heck I'll buy one.....

    Rather than use the book, you should go to the ATF website, as they have the update posted there.

    I don't understand why you are trying to make this more difficult than it needs to be. The book AND the website clearly state exactly what you said: Russian & EG Maks are C&Rs (as long as they are chambered in 9mm Mak).

    No, you can't buy the Russian "made for export" pistols with the adjustable sights, with a C&R FFL. The East German and Russian mililary pistols, however, are C&R eligible. The Bulgarian pistols also cannot be purchased with a C&R even though some may be military issue. For some reason, Bulgarian Maks never made the list.

    OK i looked at the BATF site and it just says E.G.or russian in original 9X18 mak.cal. so i got 1 yes vote and 1 no vote and a technical yes from the BATF ?????? so why wont most dealers sell these to a C&R i ran across 2 guys at the last PGH.Pa,gunshow that wouldnt sell me one on a C&R? Also TWalker why do you say NO

    When the ATF says Russian Makarov, in my opinion, they are referring to the original Russian military weapon.
    The commercial Makarovs are made in Russia, they are not "THE" Russian Makarov. I believe the ATF list came before the commercial pistols were made for export.
    I agree that there is plenty of room to argue that "All" Russian made Makarovs are C&R. I don't think that selling a Russian made commercial Makarov as a C&R would get anyone in trouble as the listing is vague. Look at the opinion on the Makarov.com web sight. I believe it is under the FAQ section. It supports my opinion somewhat. I don't see how recent commercial Maks made for export fit into the spirit of what C&R weapons are. Try to buy a commercial Russian with a C&R FFL. I think you'll find that most dealers, in practice at least, agree with me on this issue.

    Addendum: Go to Gunboards.com, then go to the Makarov Forum, look at the sticky topics at the top of the Makarov Forum. You will find in one a copy of a letter from the ATF clearly stating that commercial versions of the Russian Makarov are NOT C&R weapons.

    Thanks I will indeed look at that info also ,And i do agree that the new comercial version is not in the "Spirit" of an C&R BUT IF the ATF says its cool then so be it! i guess i was looking for a cut and dry answer about this matter .Maybe there isnt one ?

    Why not locate the place you plan on buying one from like s.o.g., aim or sarco, they usually list what is C&R compliant
