colt new service revolver

i own a 7 1/2 inch barreled colt new service revolver in 38 w.c.f....(38-40 win) in excellent condition through out. does anybody know if it would be safe to shoot winchesters current production 38-40 win ammo with catalog specs of 1160 fps muzzle velocity and muzzle energy of 538(ft-lbs) and a 180 grain soft point bullet, this is according to winchester current ammo catalog and fired from a 24 inch rifle barrel....please help with info...thanks dave

  You could always use Black Hills cowboy load .38-40 which uses a 180gr lead flat nose and produces 800fps.

  Winchester knows most people shoot that ammo in old guns. How many new 38-40's you see at your gunshop?

  Those are rifle ballistics, equal to the old low power loads.
  In about 1902, Factories also made high speed loads specifically for use in the Model 1892 Winchester. They gave about 1800fps out of a rifle and blew up some revolvers. These high speed loads for the 32-20, 38-40 & 44-40 are not loaded anymore so not to worry. Current factory loads may give you about 950fps out of your 7 1/2" NS and "Cowboy Loads, less than that.
  The New Service will handle a bit more than current factory loads.
