win. 1906 refurbish

I recently acquired a 1906 Win. in 30 WCF.All I got was the forearm and receiver with the 26" octagon barrel. It was a pile of rust and dirt dobber nests. I took it down to get it reworked and rebuilt and today I told them I wanted the peep sight added also. This project is so far costing me about $450 dollars. Is this going to be worth it or am I going overboard with wanting an original?

    The 1906 Winchester is a .22 pump rifle. Do you mean the Model 1894 in .30WCF, but made in 1906?

    We'll go on the assumption that is what you mean. If so, there is no way the gun can be truly restored from that condition for $450.00. I'm afraid you are going to get back a heavily buffed, salt-blued rifle that in no way resembles an original.

    Is the gun going to be hot blued or rust blued? Since it is a rifle, not a carbine, is it going to be stocked with a correct crescent butt stock with metal buttplate? Really, just the parts from what you describe would be close to that $450 mark.

    I hope I am wrong, but what you are going to end up spending $450 to end up with $200.

    Country and Canine have it 100%. Restoration is my thing and I couldn't have said it better.

    Yes,it's a 1894 made in 1906. I am not going to blue it at all,just keep it as is. It isn't all that bad after it's cleaned up. The new walnut stock (unstained) is on already and yes it does have the original shaped butt plate to go on it.Mostly the parts needed are the internal guts in the receiver,like the hammer and so forth. It had the lever. The peep sight is going to run $125.

    Ah, I see. Well, you might turn out OK then with a good shooter (if the bore is OK). I wish you the best with it.

    Thanks for the info,you had me scared for a minute. I got the original piece for free and thought I might get something going with it. Labor cost aren't cheap either,I think $30 an hour but these folks are always straight as an arrow with all their customers. Thanks again and I'll let you know how it comes out. I might have to sell my .225 for the cash but I think it will be O.K. in the end.
