what is the difference in ballistics beetween a .22 hornet and a 22 magnum.

With the same weight bullets (40 grain), the .22 mag might hit 2000 fps. The Hornet should do about 2,800- 2,900 fps.

if you are deciding on either the mag or the hornet-go with the hornet. it is a very fun little round. you can also reload it and make your own handloads.

No contest ! The Hornet wins hands down. With a 37 gr Calhoon Bullet at about 2900 fps it is awesome on prairie dogs.

many around here find the .17 rimfire perfect for prairie dogs (to 150m or so) because the bullet breaks up very well, and the sound-signature is "flat", not carrying very far at all. Expensive, but so is the time you waste reloading 22 Hornet ammo. 0 -
The 22 Hornet is far superior to the 22 WMR in that it is a much faster & flatter shooting cartridge, and the bullet design is much better. Standard bullet weight for the 22 Hornet is 45 grains versus the 40 grain bullet used in the 22 WMR, and it can be reloaded with any commercially available .224 diameter bullet. I personally much prefer the 22 K-Hornet to the standard Hornet. It has approximately 12% more case capacity (and a corresponding increase in performance), and in my rifle, it very accurately launches a 50 grain Sierra Blitz bullet at 2900 fps[^]. With a 35 grain Hornady bullet, it achieves 3200 fps. It is also much easier to reload than the standard Hornet cartridge. Any rifle chambered for the standard Hornet can be easily and inexpensively converted to the K-Hornet, and brass is very easy to make... simply fireform them by shooting standard Hornet cartridges.

Cost of bullets is a major thought. 50 Magnums might go as much as $10. Now 50 Hornets will be at least $25 and maybe $35 depending where you go. I have both and handload the hornet. If you are a beginner and want an inexpensive shooter, go with the magnum. If you really want to play with a nice toy, go Hornet. 0 -
223's take prairie dogs at greater ranges, and are more capable on deer,coyotes, and for fighting, too. The 223 practice ammo (which reaches further than the Hornet can) is 20c a shot, too. Why bother with the Hornet, then? It's inferior, costs more, does less. A helluva lot of prairie dogs can be taken with a decent 22 pistol, ya know. They are very prevalent, and very stupid animals. Their high metabolic rate FORCES them to be out of their holes a lot, feeding. So they can't stay hidden for very long, regardless of the risks involved with coming out of their burrows. 0 -

.223 has a MUCH loader report than the .22 Hornet. I have both, and use the Hornet when shooting in more settled area's.
My .22 Hornet loads average 2955 FPS with 35 gr. V-max, 2834 FPS with 40 gr. V-max, and 2690 FPS with 45 gr. SP. You can handload for ~$0.30/ round using new brass. Half of that once you have the brass. It is very effective on praire rats out to ~250 yards. .22 Mag is not terribly effective past 150 (they tend to get down the hole before dying). However, as has been said, Hornet is quite expensive to shoot if you do not handload.

That's right. Get subsonic 22lr's or CB caps or a pellet rifle if you want "quiet". The Hornet is still QUITE loud. 0
