Polytech M14

O.K. men I am looking at buying a polytech m14 in excellent condition. Can anyone tell me if they are prone to any problems and will U.S. parts interchange. What would be fair market value to pay for one? THANKS! Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    These rifles were made in the early 1980's in China. Even when new, they had no warranty, no US parts, no US service. The importer even hid his identity. They were sold "as is, where is". While I might buy a beach umbrella for $10 under those circumstances, I sure wouldn't buy a $500 rifle that generates 50,000 cpu of chamber pressure when fired 2 inches in front of my face.


    While it's true that the receivers are forged, they are still not made to US milspec. The bolt, trigger group, & sights are soft, & many owners find they have to be replaced. The most difficult part to replace is the bolt, since a gunsmith has to spend a lot time hand fitting a USGI bolt to a receiver that is not dimensionally correct. You might find the Fulton Armory review of Chicom clones interesting; it is on their website.

    To be fair, there have been many owners who claim to have fired many thousands of rounds through their Chicoms without problem. I would think if you could get one in the $400-500 range, it may be worth taking a chance. If you have to spend another $500-700 to get it functioning well, then it won't hurt that bad.

    I bought one when they were being imported for $350. I have not had any problems and it is more accurate than my Springfield M1A sevice grade. The one thing that bugs me on these is the flexibility of operating rod. If you pull on the cocking handle, it will flex enough to pull off of the bolt. I replaced it with a GI operating rod along with a trigger group and a stock that I bought from CMP. Unfortuately, they no longer sell the M14 parts. They were selling these at bargin prices before the military got interested in using all the left over M14s.

    I came across a Canadian dealers site and they were selling Chinese Norinco imported firearms. Unfortunately they still can't be brought into the USA, the price for the M14 was still only about $399 and that was in Canadian dollars.
