As far as 300yds, the answer is yes I have seen a deer shot IN THE NECK at 287yds with a rem700 and only 100grs of pyrodex with a 250gr barnes red hot from a 24" tube. My pard is something of a marksman with military training as was big into 1000yds in the 70's and 80's. He even added the stoney point target knobs to his scope on the ML to be able to correct for drop.
2100fps is the number you should use and maybe even 2200fps with the savage. The powder you choose can greatly affect that MV also. I see no issue with a 60" drop as that is the same as most chamberings at 600yds in a match setting. There is no difference,..as long as one knows there drops, it is as simple as taking a few clicks and firing from a steady position. I am quite often using a shooting bench located startegicaly on most of the farms we hunt. We are a long range bunch,..anyone can hit a deer at 100yds, that is quite boring to me anymore. I give most anything under 250yds a pass during rifle seasons and prefer they be at least 300yds or more.
The DNR states a legal pistol must have 700ft/lbs at the muzzle, and we know they tend to error on the side of caution. That being said,..a muzzle loader exhibiting very close to that energy at 300yds is equivalent to being shot with a legal hunting pistol at very close range. Physics is physics plain and simple. I have not had the time to run my savage on paper at 300yds yet, as I got it 2days before the season last year and had to be happy with 100yd zero,..however my pard has told me a paper plate sized group is quite doable at 300yds, he was the one who got me started in my long range avenues and his resume is impressive to say the least.
as rembrandt stated,..300yds for someone who has little or no paper time at that range is unethical,..but 300yds is simply a testing distance for us. I shoot deer all year long on crop damage permits and during hunting seasons. 300yd shots are the beggining shots on crop permits,..so we spend a great deal of time with targets, chronographs, and balistics tables. WE put in the time to be proficient,..others who do not, should not attempt these distances until such time as they are fully capable.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
