.44 mag vs. 9mm
i want to know what i should use for hunting deer a henery big boy .44 magnum or a 9mm rifle? I live in PA so no semi-auto rifles or weapons allowed for hunting.

.44 Magnum for deer! It has much better killing power on deer sized game.

I think it would be better to use the .44mag for deer hunting, if you was to use the 9mm all that mite happen is you would just wound it and that is a BIG NO NO right [^]
You have range with a rifle but the 9mm is a good close in ammo most of all so you realy do not want to use it for big game hunting, you need a hi-cal for that that is why I say the .44mag it can drop a bear at point blank range [}:)]

i cant even use a 9mm in south dakota for deer hunting to small.. i have hunted a few deer with the 44 mag...never had a prob with the stopping power..put here we cant hunt with a rifle that is chamberd for pistol rounds.. but we can hunt with the same cal in the pistol.. 0 -
Yeah they have a raly nice 9mm rifle it is a Hi-Point it will take the same Clip as the C9 pistol, I love it it fires like a dream I can hit a man target at 100yrds [}:)]
like you would not belive, but it is a Carbine so you realy do not want to go for anything farther then 50yrds [}:)]

First of all check the game laws out and make sure the 9mm is even legal for deer hunting. A 9mm will kill a deer, but it is not really a decent choice for the situation. With the exception of a survival situation, it would be the last choice for me.
Use the .44 Mag., less chance of just wounding and not recovering a deer.

9mm is not legal in this state. Get a 44 and be glad you did.

Some states have a minimum caliber size (usually equates to .243, and .223 in a few states ) and a minimum muzzle energy which the 9mm would qualify on caliber but not make the energy minimum. Be a little careful when considering pistol cartridges for big game use, typically the are loaded with defense or plinking in mind this equates to short distances, not 50 or 100 yard shots.
Get a 30/30 and you'll have more than enough gun for the job.0 -
In most states, the minimum for handgun hunting demands a 10mm Auto or 41 mag with full house loads. I have two hunting handguns; a Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull and a Desert Eagle .50 AE. I carry my 10mm while hunting with a rifle just in case I jump a deer at close range and have my rifle slung, but it is not the preferred implement.

This should put things in perspective. These numbers are for the most common barrel length in a given caliber and do not factor in many variables. Some are available as factory loads, others must be handloaded to achieve the stated ballistics. Many states have a rule of 550 FPE at 50 yards, so the 9mm is not even legal. For those on this list that can be had in a rifle, expect a 30-60% increase at the muzzle. Remember that handgun rounds loose energy much faster than rifle rounds as well, do to lower initial velocity and less areodynamic projectiles.
