Loading the 454, which powder?

I am trying to decide between 296, 4227 and AA#9 for Hornady 300 grain bullets. Anyone use these powders and have a preference?

    4227 has given me the most accurate round for my 7 and 8 inch 44 mag pistols. I prefer compressed charges for high power loadings... It eliminates the possibility of a double charge.

    I have shot a 454 for over 10 years. I have also tried a number of powders working up the best load for my gun. I have the Casull Premier grade with 7 1/2" barrel and have shot it both with and without a scope mounted on it. In all cases, WW 296 is the powder that worked best for me.

    I use AA #9 works the best out of my encore with 250gr XTP

    Don't forget to try H110, it's close to WW296 but seems to be a bit better in the accuracy dept in my 7 1/2" anyway using 300 gr XTP's and 300 gr Bull-X FN.

    Thanks all for the info, I am going to try each powder and work up a load, I will be loading for a Browning 1885 single shot in 454 Casull. I imagine it would not cause any problems to fire 45 Colt loads thru it?

    Start with a "book" load FOR THE LENGTH BARREL YOUARE USING... The longer the barrel, the higher the pressure..for the same load..

    THE LONGER THE BARREL THE HIGHER THE VELOCITY, BUT NOT PRESSURE AS FAR AS I KNOW ANYWAY.

    BBL length - velocity - pressure.

    Like many things....it depends.... and both can be right.

    A longer bbl MAY develop more pressure (than say a snubby) because a complete burn or longer burn time may exist. There is a limit to this though. Make a bbl long enough, and it will reduce velocities. There are some publications on this...it is easy to imagine this in abstract terms (an 8 ft bbl for 22 rimfire), but hard to prove with more common real world data.

    'Pressure caused velocity' , well YEAH.... but the longer you can apply the pressure (longer bbl) the more velocity will increase.

    I searched for a post that 'proved' a 'too long bbl' with a 22 that reduced velocity, but I be dangded if I can find it...must have seen it somewhere else....Anybody ?

    Yes pressure will certainly cause velocity, and the more pressure the more velocity, but the pressure is built up in the case more than the barrel, and thats probably why the strain gauges are positioned where the chamber is, and not at the end of the barrel.

    I have found that Vita n110 is the all around best for the 454, clean burning and on target, Hod 110 will give you more power but is very dirty. I load 27.5 grns vit n110 w/300xtp or try 230 grn hollow point with 33 grns vit n110. Rug454
