what is the difference between a .30 cal like the one used in the M1 Carbine in WWII and a 30-06 or a .308

In a word....velocity. I believe the .30 carbine is a straight walled cartridge. The 30-06 is a bottleneck, .308 is shorter than the 30-06 and trails by a couple hundred fps.

The .30 cal for the M1 carbine looks like a pistol cartridge but was designed for a rifle. I would not use a rifle for self defense unless that is all you have. Jim

Perhaps this will help.
The .308 and .30-06 are the same exact size and usually around 147grns just the .30-06 holds more powder therefore sending faster to the target.
Typicial bullet sizes: Although these cartridges technically can be called 30 cal, the bullet size does differ slightly.
.30 carbine diameter = .307 inch (usually 110 grns with about 900ftlbs, but not much good over 300yds)
.30cal (.30-30win and .308win/ .30-06) diameter = .308 inch
7.62x39 soviet diameter = .310 inch (ak47, sks, and mini-30) although the mini-30 has an unique throat design that allows it to accept 7.62x39 rounds loaded with .308 bullets.
.303 british diameter = .311 (british enfield rifles)

Actually, home invasions are relatively rare. You are more likely to be a victim outside your home. And, there are far more guns stolen in home burglaries than are used to repulse invaders; unless your gun is locked in a safe, it is much more likely that you will lose it to a thief before you ever use it against one.
The consequences of using a gun in home defense could be devastating to you & your family & neighbors. A high degree of expertise, & knowledge of the law, is required. I suggest that, before you do anything else, you read "In the Gravest Extreme" by Massad Ayoob.
Personally, I find that a monitored perimeter alarm system allows me to sleep well at night, without the possible adverse consequences of a shoot-out in the dark.

I have a couple of perimeter alarms. One is a Mastiff and the other is a Bulldog. [:p]
They're my first line of defence, then comes the moat, the minefield, the electric fence, and finally the 50 MW microwave emitters.
