    Basically, it's an inbetween chamber.

    Our standard chambering is the .223 Wylde as we feel it represents the best compromise between the accuracy of a SAAMI commercial spec chamber with a throat that will accommodate most NATO type ammo or ammunition loaded with the new longer projectiles without causing dangerous pressure spikes. If you prefer the 5.56 NATO chamber specifications, this is available as a no/charge option.


    SAAMI spec chambers for .223 contribute to high accuracy, but may cause problems if using mil-spec M193/M855 (see the ammo warning at the SAAMI website, search on "223") and length of cartridge (Mil-Spec does allow for a longer neck). Also, if the chamber gets dirty or there is dirt on the ammo a SAAMI chamber will more likely have problems. The new 'Wylde' chamber gives SAMMI like accuracy, but allows safe use of military ammo.


    Rock River's competition origin reveals itself in its choice of a barrel with a 1:8'' rifling twist and Bill Wylde chamber dimensions. The Wylde chamber is essentially a .223 Rem. with a shorter throat to minimize bullet jump for those, such as NRA high-power shooters, who need to get the most accuracy out of the heavy 80-gr. Sierra bullets for long-range shooting. For those who prefer shooting lighter varmint bullets in the 40- to 60-gr. weight range, Rock River offers a 1:12'' twist as an option available in rifles with the 24'' barrel length.

    This was designed by a C. Hildebrandt at Savage. I believe it is used in the savage .223 rifles. I do not have this reamer, but it should work well for HP.

    I believe this is used by Krieger and Mike Bykowski. I use it for slow twist varmint uppers but I think it is a little short, and too steep of a lead for HP.

    Info from Bushmaster (thanks!). These are one of the best out-of-the box barrels, and handle up to 80 gr bullets no problemo.
