AR15 vs M16A2 bolt carrier
after graduating Marine Corps Recruit Training, i notitced that with my bushmaster AR15 you cannot hold down the bolt catch button while retracting the charging handle as you would with and M16A2 while performing "inspection arms", it seems to bind up and you have to tap the forward assist to get it to go back, i assume this is becuase of the slightly different bolt carriers but i do not know, is this isolated to bushmasters or would it be present with all AR15s?

The internals of the AR-15 and the M-16A2 are completely different. The bolts are even different. Stands to reason that they even function differently

Although there are obvious differences in the M-16A1 and the M-16A2/M-4, they should both function the same during the manual of arms drills.

You should be able to hold down the bolt catch button and retract the charging handle just as you did on the M-16. I would have someone take a look at it.
The bolt on the M-16 and the Ar-15's are the same, its the bolt carrier that is different. The area on the bottom rear of the carrier that trips the auto sear on the M-16 carrier is removed on the Ar-15 carrier.

Both of these are on the money.
Maybe your bolt catch is binding or sticking? If it's a new rifle there might be a minor defect. First thing I'd try is to open it up, clean the catch area with a good solvent and then shoot it with BreakFree/CLP.0 -
I had a "postban" bushmaster, and currently own a noban bushmaster with all the fixins. Holding down the bolt catch while pulling the the charging handle back poses no problem for me, do it at the range during ceasefires; take the mag out, and then open the action. Might be something wrong with your boltcarrier or catch.
The fundamental difference between an ar15 carrier and an m16 carrier is actually at the back end of the carrier(opposite end of the actual bolt). On an AR15 the bottom half of the bolt carrier is cut fairly close to the back. On the M16 carrier the cut is much farter forward on the carier making the uncut area at the back much longer. This is needed because it is this uncut area that trips your auto sear or lightning link. This way an ar15 bolt cannot be used to trip the sear or link, resulting in no automatic fire.0 -
Why do people think that ar15 means semi-auto? Why do people think an "M16" is not an AR15? The rifle IS an AR15! The military gives it whatever number they want.
M16 is a military designation just like M2, MK19, M204, M240G, M249 ect....
AR15's can be semi-auto, auto or auto regulated for 3 round burst.

because thats what the manufacturers call them? look at bushies site, they differentiate between ar15 bolt carriers and m16 carriers...
but honestly, its a matter of lazyness m16 carrier is shorter than ar15 select fire carrier. that and you typically dont find many semi only m16's i have seen a full auto ar15 though, plenty of them though, its just a common usage thing, if someone says m16 they think machinegun, why not just go with that rather than explain in detail what you are trying to say?0 -
Can someone tell me if it's illegal to have a m16 style bolt carrier in an non NFA-AR-15 that has none of the other automatic parts?
Is just owning a m16 style bolt carrier illegal if you have an AR with its own bolt carrier?
Would the same be true of an AK-47? Meaning does the AK have a different bolt carrier in the semi-auto version vs. the auto version?0 -

Not quite true.
Colt has been shipping AR style rifles with M16 bolt carriers for two years.
This is very complex and can't be answered in a thread like this.

Not exactly.
What ATF says (ATF Pub 5300.4, page 156), is: "In order to avoid violations of the NFA, M16 hammers, triggers, disconnectors, selectors, and bolt carriers must not be used in assembly of AR-15 type semiautomatic rifles, unless the M16 parts have been modified to AR-15 Model SP1 configuration."
My understanding of this, based on case law, is that it is NOT illegal to install any of the parts named. BUT, if you DO, & an agent can somehow manipulate the rifle in a way that will cause it to fire more than once when the trigger is pulled, you can expect to be arrested & charged with an NFA violation.
