Winchester 1400 Vs. Remington 100
I just bought a Winchester 1400 yesterday from a local pawn shop the gun is in excellent condition and I got to go shoot it lastnight and loved it. I paid 250 atwich I thought was a good price. Getting ready for Dove once again. In your opinions would I have been better off to go with the remington 1100 as farr as realiability and maintaince or does the winchester hold up just as good??

Alot of this hinges on how well a gun was taken care of in the past, and how well you take care of it now. Your Win. should do you fine for years to come. People can be just as loyal with gun brands as they are with car brands, some love Fords, some Chevys, some love Remington, some Win. I think you got a good one.

IMO THE REM. IS FAR ABOVE THE WIN. 1200/1400 SHOTGUNS, STEEL RECEIVERS, METAL (NOT PLASTIC) FUNCIONAL PARTS, BETTER ENGINEARING. THAT SAID THE WIN. IS A FUNCTIONAL GUN AND WILL LAST IF PROPERLY MAINTAINED. 0 -
I am in full agreement with BOTH lead and Mike Whiskey. This is the old Ford Chevy controversy, however, the quality between the two is not comparable! The Rem is hands down a better gun. They handle the elements 10 -1 better and have a much more reliable action. You will pay more for that but it is worth it when you have a flight of honkers settling down on the decoys. 0 -
FWIW, the Feb. 05 issue of Field and Stream issue listed the 50 greatest firearms ever made; the Remington 1100 came in at No. 4 and the Winchester 1400 came in as one the three worst guns ever made. This is not to say you won't like your 1400, just that the experts didn't like it. It had to do with Winchester attempting to save money by just having one frame size, then taking up slack space by putting in plastic inserts that usually cracked and fell out.

Hello largej74: Well honestly, the 1100 is a superior gun to the 1400. I'm a Winchester guy, and Winchester only made one shotgun post 64 that was worth a darn and that was the Super X Md 1. The 101,23 were made in Japan. The current SXII is a version of the Browning Gold, Since the same parent company owns both USRA (Winchester) and Browning. When I bought my first gas operated semi, it was an 1100. Winchester built it's reputation on lever and pump guns, not semi-autos.
As far as price it boils down to the barrel, it's length and choke, or win-chokes. If it has win-chokes then you got it at a fair price.

Each has it's idiosyncracies, but the Winchester's are usually more troublesome. Big problem area is the plastic magazine throat. If that piece cracks (not uncommon) then the shells will no longer stay in the magazine. Trouble is that the part is basically unavailable. A 16ga mag throat is worth its weight in gold! Also, I can't begin to count how many people have asked me how to get more shells in the mag tube (they think a plug is in there). Can't do it.
1100's develop feed problems related either to the timing of the shell release or problems with the piston/gas ring. Good news is that the parts are everywhere.

largej, I bought a 1400 mark II about fifteen years ago. It was one of the uglist shotguns I had ever seen, so being a Winchester collector I just had to have it! Being value was not high and probably never will be I have shot it every bird season since. I too heard all the horror stories, probably all true, BUT I have never had a problem with mine and I have grown to really like it. I only put a few boxes thru it a season, maybe why it has lasted. 0 -
I ha both models... Winchester 1400 and Remington 1100... Im a Remington Man and I will say the 1100 is a better gun but I will say I use my 1400 more than any other shotgun or rifle for 3 reasons... 1st its lighter than my rifles or other shotguns which is a biggie... 2nd... Is was cheap and I dont mind scarring it up... 3rd I can change barrels and go slugging where rifles arent allowed..... Having said that.... Its a great all around gun and I use it more than any other.... 0 -
I have had some experience with high volume shooting on the various skeet and trap fields around this part of the world. The Remington 1100/1187 is still a very popular gun and seems to hold up to 1000's of rounds. Simple cleaning of the magazine tube is about all that seems to be required.
I never see a Winchester 1400 on the skeet fields--true the Winchester Super X-1 is still a popular gun and seem to keep on shooting without any problems. Wish I had a nice Super X-1 in a Skeet grade!!!!
