454 / 480 / 44 mag

can someone please compare these calibers for use as a deer hunting pistol.

Which is best ? how about reloading? how about Scopes?

    I have owned and shot all 3 of these cal. in the Ruger Super Redhawk , as far as i am concerned the 44mag or better yet a good loaded 45LC is all you need for whitetails , now if you ever plan on going after something bigger then use one of the other 2 , the 454 is one mean kicking handgun in a 7 1/2" SRH, I had a hard time keeping the scope from moving and could only shoot it about 12 times in a row it without really bothering my wrist,, the 480 is better in the recoil department because it has more of a hard push than the twist that the 454 gives you ,,, the one good thing about the 454 is you can use 45LC loads in it if you want

    also the 454 and the 480 both cost a lot more to shoot than a 44mag

    44 mag ammo is more readily available if you need some and you are not on your home turf.

    I have only shot 454 a few times, and it was the hardest recoil control shooting I have ever done. I believe it may all be in the geometry of the gun, even though the round is potent. No experience with 480.

    I suppose I have never yearned for the 454 or 480 because if I could not do the job with my sweet custom reload 44mag, I would go with a long gun. And I guess that is my advice....If you can't do it with the 44 mag, either you are not doing your part or the shot is not in the pistol category.

    Regarding reloading....if you want to shoot seriously with hand cannons, reloading is a MAJOR advantage. Forget the money difference, finding the sweet load makes all the difference.

    Thanks guys, I had a ruger super redhawk 9-1/2 bbl 44mag a few years ago. It was a hand cannon. Almost to much to control, I am thinking about the 7-1/4 bbl for a new one. The other two calibers I have no experience with.

    If I did not reload, I would have to live in a cardboard box.[:D]
