Savage 99 Production

I have a Savage 99, 300 Sav. Serial no. 597xxx; checking the unofficial savage site it tells me the date of mfg to be after 1951. 566000 being the cut-off. If they made 6000 copies per year, this could be a 1956, 57-ish.

Does anyone know the skinny on production numbers?

    Most of the lists stop with 1952. It appears that after that either no records were kept, or more likely the rocords are lost. I believe mine dates to 1957, so I think I have later records in a book at home. I will try to check tonight.

    The serialization for the 99 is just not available past 1950. I have found nothing on why, since they were built for an additional 25+ years. Best I can offer is to work with you on trying to sort out the model of 99 you have and a range of years when it was produced. From the particular characteristics of stampings, sights, forends checkering, butt plates etc. it may be possible to narrow it down some. If you are interested, e-mail me though the board.

    Not meaning to dismiss anything He Dog has said, you will probably get some real insight over at 24hrcampfire.com. There is a group of model 99 collectors there whom are highly knowledgeable, have contacts, records of their own, etc. Chances are "they" will be able to provide you with all the info there is to be had on such a "new" model 99. I would guess the lever boss will hold the clue to nailing down the age of the rifle as much as is possible. That would be all I have to offer.

    Boy, Wanted man, I wish some of those guys would leave the campfire long enough to publish some of that serialization information! Thanks for the boost.

    If you figure an average number of guns being made for three years ( 1948, 49, & 50) savage averaged very close to 28,000- 30,000 per year. going on serial # alone I would guess your gun to be a 51/ 52 model. but like HE DOG says you can get a very good idea if you know the options on the gun. shape of forarm, style of sights, buttplate ect, ect. But wanted man is right the guys at 24hour have a much greater gathering of knowledge about the 99 than anywhere I have found so far. good luck.

    The three rifles linked below are identical to mine. The first two came roughly 12K copies after mine and the last one the listing has it mfg. in 1950.

    Using your 28 to 30K numbers you're probably correct it is possibly a late 52 early 53.

    I'm surprised the production numbers were that high; although according to Carmichel, Savage made a million 99's.

    toolmaker after seeing the others on auction it made me think. to get any better idea of D.O.M. the only thing left to do is go by the stamps on the bbl. there is a very good reference book I like to use by D.P. MURRY called savage 99 rifles. THE NINTEY NINE. this book is very accurate according to savage ind.its helped me a number of times. good luck with your 99 I have several and love them all!
