    I know this is a common subject, but....
    I just ordered a used Yugoslavian SKS and am wandering what I need to do before I go out and shoot this thing. I would assume break it down and clean the hell out of it. Also, are pretty much all sks parts interchangeable with these YUGO's??? Any other information you can provide a first time sks owner would be great.

    Yea you need to give it a real good bath first before firing it. Not 100% sure if other types of sks parts will interchange but really no reason to do so as a yugo parts gun could be had for 40-50 bucks. Here is a good site to pick over. Have fun with your new rifle.[:D][:D]

    Unless you know that the gun was actually fired (successfully), you will need to take it down to the last itty bitty part. They weren't just covered in grease; they were FILLED with it!

    It was confirmed that it has been fired. Am I safe to assume that I could clean the bore and action and add some fresh oil??

    As long as the bore is clear, & the firing pin moves freely in the bolt, it will be good-to-go. Functioning problems in Yugos are often traced to failure to completely clean the gas system.

    There several parts unique to the Yugo. Most SKS parts dealers do not identify the source of their parts, so replacement can require a little patience/modifications. Fortunately, SKS's rarely break; just be careful with the small parts to prevent loss.

    Make sure you clean the bolt and firing pin and also the Gas tube, it maybe still full of cosmolene----nothing like a cloud of smoke and a sticky firing pin----may fire , may slame fire, may not fire, clean the bolt and firing pin
    be safe !!!!

    and download and print out a manual that you can take to the worktable with you. Then buy some mineral spirits and a gun cleaning kit from wallmart (for thirty caliber rifles, about $10.00)
    take that rifle apart and clean it really good. There are 16 year old kids all over the country who have been successful at this task, you can do it. It's very important to read a manual to learn about the safe operation of this assault rifle. Here, a little laziness can get you or someone in your vicinity injured or killed.

    The link that D&D gave you is really good. Have it up (the webpage where he gives step-by-step photo-instructions on the dissassembly and reassembly of the SKS)while you read the print-out you make from the manual down-load at this link:

    and you'll be able to complete the operation easily.

    The mineral spirits works great on the metal and the stock. One other hint I would give you is that you should not dissassemble the recoil spring assembly. Just take it out and swish and brush it clean. Same with the trigger assembly.

    You'll enjoy this experience, and the added confidence that being responsibly informed and familiar with the rifle will make owning and shooting it a lot more fun and way safer.[^]
