500 S&W why?
why in the worldwould anyone wnat to buy a 500 S&W magnum, i mean i have a .44 magnum how much difference is in them, can you give me some statistics on there differences

the difference between the .44 and .500 is like comparing a 30 carbine and a 30-06 . . . . POWER
the .500 was designed as a large game revolver cartridge. it will take down game in a single shot that might take the .44 a couple of shots i. E. Kodiak bear
go to the S & W website, sure they they will have balistic, muzzle energy, etc comparisons. if i remember correctly when the round first came out they were advertise real life size comparisons

it doesn't matter how big your gun is, it's what you do with it when it counts

Well, considering it produces nearly twice the muzzle velocity and over 3 times the muzzle energy as the 44MAG and with a bullet that weighs nearly twice as much, the answer is POWER! 0 -

Here is the ballistic answer to your question:
To each his own. The two are not really comparable in so far as velocity or dumping energy into the target. The 500 S&W can launch a 400 grain bullet 600 fps faster than the 44 Mag and will deliver a little less than 1000 more ft-lbs at the muzzle.

The 500 is for shooting things that are REALLY BIG (like moose).
Its probably a viable substitute for a rifle in that sense, for for bulk or weight reasons you dont want to carry one.
Its also for people who want to have the very biggest gun available (possibly because they feel inadequate about certain other "equipment" if you know what I mean).0 -
[8D]--In real life-- Mr. Smith/Wesson felt that --as you drew down on your ELK at 500 yds(with your WBY 270 mag)all of a sudden a 1200lb grizzly--charges you--You "calmly" take out your -"handy"- S&W 500 and swiftly-dispatch the beast-then mark the position of the (dead) elk and set up camp and BBQ chicken-right[?]oops,I was fishing-[xx(][xx(][:p][:D]--JIMBO
