blackpowder revolver.....

Got a blackpowder revolver at a farm auction.....CVA, no where at all on it does it have a model number or caliber....so, howsa person gonna know how to load it....the bore and cylinders are bright and clean, as is the whole gun, timing seems fine etc. I have had two "gunsmiths" look at it and they had different opinions as to what caliber it is, altho neither used any tools to measure the bore....any ideas, y'all? Thanks!

    Forgot to mention that it has two piece walnut grips and a brass frame, and looks like the CVA Remington 1858 replica, which I think would make it a 44 caliber?

    Most likely if its one of the Italian made Remington repros, then it is probably .44 caliber which usually takes a .451 caliber round ball. A good gunsmith should be able to measure the exact chamber and bore diameters.

    Hello unlike a patched round ball in a rifle, on a revolver the bullet should be a tight fit in the chamber of the cylinder. When you use the rammer it should cause the ball to take some presure to seat on the powder. you shoud also seal the ball with some grease ETC you don't want the ball to jump forward in the cylinder under recoil from the first shots as this will cause a air space between powder and ball "not good " or it can stick out the front of cylinder and keep it from turning "very bad". Use only pure soft lead.

    58 remington CVA is like stated above most likely a 44 caliber and made in Italy. It will take a .451,.454, or a .457 ball. I had a CAV 58 and I used the .457 in it. All the bigger ball does is save a .006 larger ring of lead from it when you load it into the cylinder and that ensurs a good tight fit in the cylinder. It will take 30 grains of FFF Black Powder or 28 grains of pistol Pyrodex. On top of that (I used 30 grains of FFF BP) I used a felt wonder wad and then 10 grains of cream of wheat as a filler, the seated the ball on the cream of wheat. You do not have to use the cream of wheat, all it does is get the ball closer to the barel. The closer the ball is to the barrel, the better the accuracy is IMHO and many other target shooters opinions. Now on top of the ball, you are suppposed to put a thin film of bore grease BUT there again I did not and as to the use of the bore grease, you will get so many different opinions on it it is not funny. Best thing to do is buy a god book on Black Powder loading/shooting that covers pistols as well.



    Education is nothing if common sense and manners are not in the curriculum!
