S&W 1500

Hi again,
I have a friend offering to trade a S&W1500 in .243. I know nothing about the gun, he claims it's mint and a sweet rifle. I haven't seen it yet, we're getting together in a couple of days to talk trades. Any info on it will be greatly appreciated. No idea of age on it either.

    My references note that their were (2) versions of the S & W 1500. Early one ( 1974-1981 ) was built on Sako made actions that were assembled/built into rifles in the states. Later were built in Japan by Howa ( 1981- 1985 ).

    I sold the Howa version years ago. They were quality rifles.

    If you can make a good trade for one, I would go for it.

    Thanks for the reply. My friend wants to trade it for a 1998 Ruger M77Mark II in 30.06. I am looking for a .243, bolt action is fine, wanted a box mag, but will take what I find. Local gun shop has offered me $400 in trade for the Ruger. Is the S&W worth more than $400? He has kinda offered a Benelli Nova 20ga shotgun to go with it. Any advice appreciated

    The S&W 1500, the Howa 1500, and the Weatherby Vanguard are the same animal. I often sell the NIB Howa 1500 for $305 and the Vanuard for $349, so no, it's not a fair trade. A dealer would not give him more than $150 or $175 for the S&W 1500, if that. If in excellent condition, I (as a dealer) would give about $130.00. But the S&W 1500 is a fine rifle. I built a custom rifle off the Howa 1500 action and it's one of the best rifles I own (out of over 100).

    Thanks for the values. I had about figured out that the Howa1500 and S&W were probably the same from research on here. Last we talked he was throwing in a Benelli Nova pump 20G, which I figure is worth about the same, $150 or less. A third friend mentioned to me he's been out shooting and the Nova misfeeds or jams a lot.

    Hmmm, wonder how many other guns I can get out of this guy for my .30-06. LOL. might get a real interesting collection going...
