30-06 vs. .308
i want to know what i should buy for a high powered rifle a 30-06 or a .308, if you give me an awnser give a few qualities of both calibers.

The only real meaningful difference in the two cartridges, is that the 30-06 is capable of shooting 180 - 220 grain bullets a bit faster than the .308... otherwise, there is no difference in the two.

i have both but i think they shoot about the same.. just alittle more power behind the 30-06 bullet wise there almost identical. i prefer the 308 if i hunting small deer and the 30-06 for larger game.. 0 -
The purpose of the .308 was to have a .30-06 equivelent cartridge in a short action rifle. The bullet diameter is the same (.308) and the .308 is about 90-95% of the .30-06 interms of velocity, energy and recoil. Maybe a nickels worth of difference, not much more, with the edge going to the 06. The 06 is one of the most useful cartridges for hunting in North America and will handle a very wide range of game. That said, personally I don't much like it, and shoot either a 7mag or a .308 when I need a larger bullet or more speed.
Best plan for you is to try to shot rifles in both calibers and make your own choice.0 -
Both .308 and 30/06 are very popular and ammunition is available world wide for both. I use a 30/06 as my primary hunting rifle there is a difference although small with the advantage going to the '06, usually about 150 to 200 feet per second with factory loads. Factory loadings for both have quite a variety but try to find anything heavier than 180 grain bullets and the '06 takes the advantage. Most people in most hunting/shooting situations wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two. 0 -
Lets not forget the cheap surplus ammo factor. The 7.62x51 is loaded for all western/nato militaries and because of this the surplus ammo for plinking looks to be secure for many years to come. This is what gives the .308 a major edge to my way of thinking. Also, if I am hunting anything that I don't want to shoot with a .308 then the 30-06 isn't really going to hack it either. I'll be thinking magnum about then. 0 -
im not an affecianado(sp) on either ( I shoot .300mag ) but from what I've heard generally speaking the .308 gets the edge in the accuracy dept and another small advantage is the .308 is a short action cartridge short action = lighter rifle

i have both, and have to say it will really depend on what your personal preference is- short action or long action. handloads can widen the gap for the 30-06 though in all the bullet weights, my personal favorite loads that work excellent on bear and moose are the hornady 180gr. spire points with WIN 760 and nosler partition 180gr. with IMR 4350- both pushed fast in the 30-06. i've used the 308 on bear, moose and caribou also and its worked great, the rifle is a little bit lighter and shorter which makes it easier to carry, it will also consistantly shoot tighter groups than both of the 30-06 rifles i used. that being said my nod would have to go to the 30-06, just a little more comforting knowing there's a little more power. just my opinion.

[8D]--You know--Long action/short action-- Who really gives a flack, we're talking about a 40 yr old argument that means NOTHING-308/30-06 we're talking about RIFLES and age--the 308 are more popular now--because they're NEW'ER--there are doc. sniper kills during VIET NAM and WW11 with the '06 at 1005 yds, the ONLY real diff is RECOIL and thats all the NEW paper soldiers think of. Don.t judge me on that , except that the "06 is legend and hard to beat. Which means is __WHATS THE ARGUMENT [}:)][}:)][}:)][:D]

sir, in my humble opinion that is the greates thing someone has ever said. i am only 23 and my friends and i have had these discussions/arguments over which is better, more accurate, etc millions of times and the 308/30-06 is one of the grandaddies of gun arguments

i personaly do not beleive that you need to carry an anti tank rifle for personal protection.
it doesn't matter how big your gun is, it's what you do with it when it counts

--Hey- the 308 was initiated because the GOV'T thought we could still fight at 100/200yds and carry less weight . Well shoot, guess what--WE can't fight at 100/200 yd's , but the .308 "GREW", because of short action/less recoil--Big deal,If you're a MAN/WOMAN *(PC) who gives a snot.1000 yd matches have been going on for 90 yrs and only edging to the 308 , because of social BS.--[}:)][}:)][:o)][:D]

If the 308 was just invented today, they would call it the 30-06 Short Mag or the 308WSM as it does the same things as the 30-06 up to 180 grain bullets. The 30-06 excels at the heavier 200 and 220 grain loadings.

When I was younger I could shoot a hundred rounds of 30-06 reloads in one sitting.I helped my buddy sight in his .308 saturday , and the kick was a lot less then my 30-06.I think I could have shoot 100 rounds thru his rifle.
