Which rifle?? Which rifle?? Semi-auto Please!

Now, I make a habit of using "search" for this forum to handle my everyday questions...and I find most of my answers!! But sometimes I just have to ask the question MY WAY! Here goes:
I was bidding on a Remington 742 that happened to be in .308 caliber. After reading past forum questions on the 742 I wasn't so sure I wanted one. But 742s are a pretty good buy and, loads in several caliber choices. But, OK, if the 742 eats it's own receiver for lunch what would be a good second choice for a .30 cal. semi-auto...but not the evil black rifle style and still goes easy on the budget??

how about a browning BAR? if so, get a belgian one, they are alot better quality, thats what i hear. you can get them in many grades and are wonderful, accurate guns. pretty much all the basic 30 calibers. 308. 30/06. 300's. and probably more.

I've always been kinda fond of Winchester's Model 100 in .308![;)]

..I've been runnun a 742 carbine in 30-06 for over 20 yrs now and she hasn't failed me yet. Have put several back togehter and one that really tore itself up beyond repair...but tha was operator lack of intellegence.. The pre-64 Winchester 100 is another prize, but prone to problems also.

Hey Jim any of the newer Remingtons are pretty good
model 74 sportsman made only in 30-06 from 1985-87 cheaper wood
model 4 nice wood and blueing made 1982-87
7400 introduced in 1982 cals are 243, 270, 280, 308, 30-06, 35 whelen.
in 1996 they started doing the fine line engraving on the receivers
Winchester 100 hard to find and when you do are usually on the higher side , also had a fireing pin problem with a recall that is still in effect today
Browing Bar nice rifle but again on the higher side price wise0 -
i just picked up a 7400 270 myself, so that would be my choice. i paid $300 total shipped in a hard case. it is synthetic/matte though.
I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.0 -
I've got to give a thumbs up to the newer Remingtons too. I have a Remington 7400 - - semi-auto .30-06 that has performed flawlessly for years. Inexpensive, reliable, pretty accurate a good choice.
If you have a little more $$$ to spend the Browning is an excellent choice. A guy I have been hunting with for over 20 years uses nothing but Browning semi-auto rifles in various calibers - - he has never had a complaint or problem with any on the ones he owns.0 -
I have had two Rem 743 308s and never had a problem with either one of them. If it's a fair price then buy it. 0 -
id go with the benelli r1. hands down the smoothest rifle ive ever shot, VERY minimal recoil/"barrel jump" which is nice for a QUICK follow up shot if one is needed.

Have 2 belgium browning BAR, 7mm mag and 300 win mag, and never one problem with either....been on many hunts horseback and have been very accurate for a hunting rifle and no malfunctions whatever....have no experience with other makes/models, but these work well for sure....good luck on your new acquisitions!
