s x s 16 ga shotgun
can anyone help me with some info on an old sidelock double barrel 16 guage. It has no mfgr's name on it. Below the barrels is stamped W & K, following that is 173. The choke is 17.0 on both barrels. On the flats beside the pivot point is an oval with a star at the bottom, a crown at the top and the letter E, L, & G inside. I can make out what looks like AKAH stamped on one flat. The only other mark is a J.S. stamped between the barrels on the lower side. The gun is engraved and tight, just wondered if it was safe to shot and who made it.

It is an inexpensively made Belgian scattergun from the 1890 - 1914 timeframe, and NO, it is not safe to shoot with ANY modern manufactured factory ammo. Chances are very good that it has damascus steel barrels, and that it has shorter than currently standard chambers.

AKAH is tradename/brandname used by a very well known German Sporting Goods wholesaler/distributor, ( Albrecht Kind ). They have been in business since the 1850's. Your shotgun as the previous poster noted, was made in Belgium for them.
It's doubtful if Kind exported shotguns for sale to the U.S. Your shotgun was either brought over from Europe by a emigrant or by a G.I. as a souvenir after the war.
